chapter four;
A HUNDRED DEGREES.

"YOU THREW the first punch," Sam scowled, clearly displeased. He crossed his arms over his chest, and glared down at the man who was comfortably sprawled out across Emily's sofa. In response, Cole swiftly tossed a goldfish into the air, catching it between his lips a moment later.

"Actually, I didn't. Jeremy did," Cole corrects, popping a few more goldfish into his mouth. "He just didn't land the first punch. I don't miss."

Sam smacked Cole's hand as it reached for more goldfish. Cole let out a soft ouch before going quiet, his eyes trained on Sam. Effortlessly, Sam trapped Cole against the couch, one hand on the armrest and the other on the back of the couch. Cole slowly sat up, meeting his eyes; then, he noticed the fire in them.

"I don't care, Cole," Sam said, his eyes dark. Cole's eyes slowly dragged over to Emily, who was shifting uncomfortably in the doorway. He watched as she crept up the stairs, avoiding the two feuding shifters. Then, his eyes met Sam's again, and Cole could feel his teeth grind together.

He didn't need some lecture.

Cole narrowed his eyes, "Let me guess, Sam. I threatened the pack, put you in the spotlight, and would've gotten in trouble with Charlie had I thrown the first punch?"

"Cole."

"I'm well aware of what I did, and I'm very much prepared for the consequences, so if you're done, I've got somewhere to be," Cole began, his eyes rolling violently. He started to stand, forcibly pushing against Sam's figure to get him out of the way ━ only, Sam Uley was not a man to respond well to being pushed around, and he immediately reacted.

Sam roughly pushed Cole back down, knocking the air out of him from the whiplash of the two movements. He began a hey! under his breath, but his words were merely shadows in the presence of Sam's voice, "Yes, Cole. You're exactly right. You drew attention to us. You broke a human's nose. You encouraged a fight. You, Cole. No one else."

"And what should I have done instead? Watch Jeremy and Paul go at it like animals? Should I have let my imprint remain in danger?" Cole immediately spat out, the words burning on his tongue, the fire spreading to lips as every syllable escaped.

Cole didn't like being the beta.

Sam was an alpha guilty of abusing his power. He always had been, really. He meant well at heart, and Cole knew that, but he didn't always do well, and that's what really mattered. He could preach about rules all he wanted but at the end of the day, he'd been the very person who'd broken them all those years ago.

"You should have found a way to neutralize the situation without a need for a physical altercation, Cole. You know that better than anyone. I expected better from you," Sam looked down, sneering. "I guess I'll have to lower my expectations."
