chapter five;
DOUBLE LIFE.
"WELCOME TO the pack, bro."
Cole's voice fell upon Jared's deaf ears as he spun, eyes dancing across every piece of Emily's house. They analyzed the kitchen island, the large table with eight seats, the sofa hidden in the corner, briefly slid up the stairs, and, finally, landed on Cole's smug figure leaning in the entryway.
"So this is why you two are so . . . sketchy," Jared huffed. "You're both werewolves; I am a werewolf."
Cole couldn't find it in himself to correct his terminology. Instead, Cole shrugged. He tossed his keys towards the small basket sitting on a table near the door. "I wouldn't consider us sketchy," Cole raised a brow. He headed towards the kitchen with every intention of raiding Emily's goldfish stash.
He frowned when he saw the childproof lock she'd placed on her goldfish cabinet. He began to fumble with it as Jared took a seat at the table. "So what, then?" Jared questioned, crossing his arms. "You aren't sketchy but you got buff out of nowhere, got a tattoo, and stopped attending school for a bit?"
Cole continued to argue with the lock, angrily attempting to rip it off to no dismay. How the hell do these things work? When Jared cleared his throat in expectation, Cole peered over the kitchen island, "What? Oh, I mean . . . dunno. Not like I signed up for this shit. If I had, I'd be getting paid for it."
When Sam turned, Billy had directed him straight to Cole.
Sam handled it a lot better than any other Quileute shifter had prior, including Cole, but he still needed guidance from someone with experience. Due to this, Cole had missed a week of middle school whilst helping Sam adjust. He failed a math test because of it (not that he would have passed if he'd attended, really); Jared always made fun of him for it.
One thing that Cole noticed, however, was that his maturity didn't really hit him until he was older. With Sam, his change was immediate. He got tall, got buff, got strong ━ it was what first started drawing attention to the men of La Push in a suspicious light.
For Cole, though, these changes didn't take place until he was sixteen. It wasn't gradual, either; he just woke up with muscles like no one could imagine. He was already tall, but he grew right below six foot that fated morning. It was drastic, but luckily for Billy, Cole's a summer baby, so he didn't have to explain anything in the middle of the school year.
God bless.
At Cole's nonchalance, Jared hummed, "When'd you change?"
"When I was eight," Cole admitted. He ignored Jared's look of shock, merely hooking his nail in the small opening in the hopes of tugging the lock apart with his nail. It didn't work, and Cole inevitably huffed, yelling, "Emily! You get down here right now and let me have my goldfish!"
