A solar eclipse was a rare experience back on Earth. On Pandora, however, it was a daily occurrence that typically lasted eight minutes. It also happened to be one of Nix's favorite times to explore the forest which, at the moment, was exactly what she was doing.

She had strung along during Roman's guard shift—per usual—thinking today would be like any other. But it became a little more special when she spotted something as rare as a solar eclipse on her home planet.

A viperwolf.

What was strange about it was that they hardly ever came near RDA sites, and they usually moved in packs. And even though Nix knew Roman would be pissed, she had an overwhelming urge to follow it.

So, with her journal and bag, that is exactly what she did.

Coincidentally, the solar eclipse set in just as she rushed deep into the forest. The bioluminescence glowed in brilliant blues, greens, and violets, lighting up the darkened forest.

Nix stared down at her feet, grinning from ear to ear as each step she took resulted in a green-ringed wave around her boots. Tiny woodsprites were floating above her as she traversed a path of anemonids that glowed teal. She touched each flat surface of the carnivorous plant, noting the slight sticky feel (how it entrapped insects).

While tracing the viperwolf's footsteps, Nix reached a blue leafy bush that it jumped behind. She gradually slowed to a halt, settling in a crouch before pushing back a few leaves to see what was concealed behind the flora.

To her surprise, there was a shallow cave that contained a fairly small family of viperwolves. A mother was feeding her three pups while two other adults were feasting on what looked to be old meat. She'd located their den.

Nix quickly opened her journal to take notes of the creatures. The one she'd been tracking was out searching for fresh food which is why it strayed so close to the drill site. She wished she would've brought meat or something edible for the carnivores, but she only carried fruits in her bag.

As she flipped to the next page of her journal, the soft drawn-out noise seemed to capture the attention of one of the viperwolves. Its head snapped to look at her behind the bushes.

Nix felt her heart stop as the wolf-like creature curled its lips, revealing its sharp canines as it moved to stand protectively in front of the mother and her pups. The guttural snarl it let out seemed to draw the other's attention away from the browning meat.

Immediately, Nix pushed to her feet as not one but two viperwolves had their fierce green eyes set on her. They were known to dislike humans—understandably—and she wouldn't put it past them if they were hungry enough to try and eat her.
