It had been a week since Grandma was discharged from the hospital, and the doctor had warned us to shield her from any stress. We were determined to keep Grandma worry-free.

"Anika Di... Anika Di..."

Siya's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Yes, what happened?" I asked, refocusing on them.

"I think these earrings would look better with this saree," Siya suggested.

"Yeah, this one looks good. What do you think, Ruhanika?" Kavya chimed in.

Absently, I replied after checking in the mirror, "Yeah, this one seems fine."

"Why do you look so worried suddenly? Look at your face in the mirror, you seem lost," Kavya remarked, irritation creeping into her tone.

"Di, are you upset?" Siya asked, concern coloring her voice.

"If you didn't want to get married, why did you say yes then?" Kavya questioned bluntly.

"It's because of Grandma. When she told me about the promise she made to mom,

I couldn't say no, so I said yes," I explained.

"Oh, this girl! What am I going to do with her?" Kavya sighed in frustration.

"Di, what if I tell them that when the groom's family comes to see you, we'll put chili powder in their tea, they'll run away themselves," Siya suggested mischievously.

"Shut up," I scolded Siya absentmindedly while adjusting my earrings.

"Don't you find it a bit strange, Ruhanika?" Kavya asked, her voice tinged with suspicion.

"What? What are you asking about?" I inquired.

"The proposal from MLA, especially for you," Kavya said, her doubt palpable.

"Yeah, it does feel weird to me too, but what can we do now? They're coming to see me today," I said sadly.

"Ruhanika, are you ready?" Chhoti Maa's gentle voice interrupted as she entered the room.

"Almost ready, aunty," Kavya replied on my behalf.

Chhoti Maa came closer and said warmly, "My child looks so beautiful. Come here," hugging me from behind.

"May no evil eye fall on her," Mom said softly, applying the black kohl behind my ears.

"If the MLA gets an evil eye on her," Siya joked lightly.

I rolled my eyes at her childishness, and Kavya and Mom chuckled.
