It was a warm summer's night. Soft, orchestral music was playing and many people were laughing and dancing. It was the night of the annual masquerade ball of The House of El.

Kara Zor-El, daughter of Lord Zor-El and his wife Lady Alura, was making her way down the staircase of the House of El manor to join her parents at the party.

She was wearing a white dress with lace sleeves and a print of the House of El logo on her chest. She could already hear the laughter and the music coming from the grand hall as she made her way towards the doors. She opened them with a heave and took in the scenery before her.

The ballroom was decorated with prized crystal chandeliers, lit up by many candles and beautiful flower arrangements. The light of the many small crystals danced around the room and the many guests basked in it.

There were many fine gentlemen dressed in tuxedos and young maidens in their finest gowns. The air smelled of expensive perfume and champagne, a mix of floral and sweet.

Kara moved through the crowd until she found her parents, who were talking to a slightly older gentleman she had never met before.

"Mother? Father?" She smiled as she walked over to them.

"Kara, dearest! You look absolutely beautiful!" Her mother smiled back at her.

"Kara, this is Lord Lar Gand. He is from Daxam, two cities further south. Lord Lar Gand, this is our daughter Kara." Zor-El introduced the two.

"It's nice to meet you, Lord Lar Gand." Kara curtsied.

Lord Lar Gand bowed in return, "The pleasure is mine. Your parents speak very highly of you, young miss."

Just then, a young gentleman walked over to them and interrupted,

"Lord Lar Gand, if I may cut in? Miss Kara, would you do me the honour of a dance?" He held out his hand for her to accept.

"Yes, I would." She smiled at the young man's charm and took his hand.

The two took to the dance floor and elegantly moved with the other couples on the dance floor. Kara's dress twirled perfectly with her and her earrings jingled slightly as she spun. After a few minutes the music died down again.

"I never got your name, sir." Kara asked as the dance slowed down and they curtsied and bowed to end the dance.

"I am Master Wayne, first son of Lord Wayne." The young man smiled.

"It was a pleasure to dance with you, Master Wayne." Kara laughed, the thrill of the dance still hanging in the air between them.

"Please, the pleasure was all mine." He winked and kissed her hand before leaving to talk to other guests.

Several dances later, Kara was feeling quite thirsty so she made her way to the refreshment table. She picked up a cold glass of lemonade and took a sip.

Two young men approached her from behind and started making conversation with her.

"Miss Zor-El? It is a pleasure to meet you." One of the young men said as he took Kara's hand and gave it a gentle kiss, "My name is Lord Michael and this is my friend, Lord McAllister." Lord McAllister bowed next to him.

Kara curtsied and she greeted the men, "It is very nice to meet you both. I do hope you are both enjoying the party tonight."

Under the cover of the setting sun, a young maiden was trying to slip into the House of El ball. Her name was Lena Luthor, daughter of Lord Lionel Luthor and Lady Lillian Luthor. She had heard about the lavished balls that the House of El throws and she knew she wanted to experience one at least once in her life. 'Mother would have my head, if she knew' she thought to herself. She snuck over the garden wall and ran to the doors as quietly as she could.
