Trigger! Emotional and referenced physical abuse!!
"Get out of here you slut!" My dad yells, pushing me out the door. He tosses a bag of my things out behind, hitting me in the head. The door slams.
At least I'm out of that shithole. I think, shouldering my bag and trudging to my car. It's full of things I guess my dad thought I would bring and the car is almost falling apart. It'll be a long drive but at least I have a destination. And some money.
The Civic takes a few turns to start before I speed off west. I follow the directions until 1 AM hits and I decide to pull off into a rest stop. I plug my phone in and set an alarm for 7 before curling up in the backseat.
My stomach wakes me up before my phone and I groan. I quickly pull myself back into the drivers seat and head onto the interstate again. The first sign I see is for McDonald's and I pull off.
I drive from 7-10:30 before finally reaching the house. He'd given me the address for emergencies. Sleep-deprived and hungry I walk up to the large front door and knock.
He answers, looking surprised to see me. "Roni? What are you doing here?"
"Dad. He kicked me out." I rub my eye, still bruised from the other day. "Can you at least help me get a place to stay near here? I doubt you need another mouth to feed here."
"What the fuck are you saying? Come in!" He looks worried but why would he? Why worry for me? "Here, you can crash on the couch until we can get the extra bedroom set up. You can meet the others tomorrow, yeah?" I nod sleepily and fall onto the soft cushions.
"Roni?" A voice makes me jumps awake. "What are you doing here?"
"Sleeping." I hum, putting my head back down.
"Why are you sleeping here?" Colby asks, sounding confused.
"My dad kicked me out. I drove here."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't lie."
"I'm... not?" I pick up my head at this. I see Colby's eyes widen when he sees my bruised face. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine."
"Good morning Roni." I hear Sam coming down the stairs. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"I can eat here?" I sit up, my stomach growling at the thought of food.
"You're going to live here, sis. Of course you can eat here."
I get up as Sam moves to the kitchen, cracking some eggs into a pan and throwing some bacon into the microwave. Colby slides around him as he makes three cups of coffee, he takes his black, fills one a fourth of the way with creamer and hands it to Sam, and gives me a second one black with the creamer and sugar. I nod and fill mine the same amount as Sam's with the creamer before cautiously sipping it.
"What's up brothers!" I turn quickly at the new voice, almost dropping my mug. "Who's the chick?" The man has shorts and a hoodie on, his hair is pulled back in a man bun and his eyes are wide as he traces my body. It makes me feel sick.
"My little sister. She's moving in." Sam answers shortly. "Roni, this is Corey. Corey, Veronica."
"Hi." My voice is little more than a whisper. He's new, scary, possibly dangerous.
"Hey! Glad to have a new face here!"
Why? What are you going to do? My heartbeat picks up and I turn away to go to the other side of the room. I can see all three men here. "You ok kiddo?" Corey asks. I nod quickly and hug my mug to my chest, covering myself.
Sam slowly walks over, I look at him and he sadly smiles, placing my plate down. I wait until everyone has food before looking at Sam again. He sighs and nods. I start eating, trying to pace myself so I don't get hurt. I can't trust Corey. He's new.
After I finish, I go around, taking everyone's plates and beginning to wash them.
"She's helpful." Corey chuckles.
"She doesn't want to be." Sam sighs. "We have a working dishwasher, sis. You just need to rinse them and I can start it." I look at him, expecting a joking smile and a yell to tell me to keep working. I'm met with soft eyes that confuse me. He takes the dishes from me and places them in the dishwasher.
"May I go change?" My hands clasp in front of me and I look down.
"Do you have anything to change into?" Sam asks, leaning back against the counter.
"I think. I don't know what dad put in my bag." I walked over to my duffel, looking through it until I found some sweatpants and a tank top. "This might be it though." I sigh, digging more. "Just old stuff he hated."
"You can go out later to shop if you want?" Sam asks, walking me to the bathroom. I nod shortly and wait for him to close the door. I change quickly, not wanting him to get mad about the door being closed for too long. When I opened it again, Sam wasn't waiting on the other side. But another guy had appeared and was standing in the kitchen. I freeze.
"Roni, this is Jake. He lives here too. Him and his girlfriend Tara, really, but she's asleep." He explains with a smile. Jake walks forward with his arms out and I flinch. He stops short and frowns.
"I'm not going to hurt you. I just wanted a hug." He tilts his head. I shake mine and hold out a hand. He takes it and before looking at me, half confused and half pitifully.
"Corey's girlfriend Devyn is upstairs with Kat, my girlfriend, maybe you could go shopping with them?" I nod and shove my old clothes back into my bag.
"Should I leave this here? Your living room looks dirty now, I'm sorry. I'll put it in the closet or something. Oh my god I never even folded the blanket. I'm so sorry, your house is a mess now." I start to spiral before a weight comes down on my shoulders. I flinch before realizing it's Sam, looking at me with sad eyes.
"The house isn't a mess. Me and the boys can fix up the extra room while you're gone and we'll put your things in there. You don't have to worry about cleaning, ok?" He moves his hands so they're on my back as he hugs me to him. I don't know if it's for comfort or to stop my shaking but I lean against him anyway.
As I walk back, I see Corey and Jake whispering. "What's her deal, bro?" Jake asks, cupping a hand around his mouth.
"Please don't talk about her like she's not here, assholes. And it's none of your business anyway." Sam turns and glares at the two making them stop and nod quickly.
I hear giggling from the stairs and turn to see two girls walking together. One has dark hair with pink almost from the roots and the other has lighter hair and perfect makeup.
"Hi! I'm Devyn! Who are you?" The one with lighter hair asks.
"This is my sister, Veronica. She's moving in." Sam answers, wrapping an arm around my shoulder protectively.
"I'm Kat, I'm Sam's girlfriend." She holds out a hand and I take it.
"I was hoping you guys could help her shop for clothes? She... doesn't have much." The two girls nod enthusiastically and Kat takes my hand. "Don't spend it all, ok?" Sam looks at her with slight sternness as he hands her his credit card. Kat nods and lightly drags me outside. I slip on my sneakers before I'm pulled out the door and out in the passenger seat of Sam's car.
