(Ash’s POV)
The days following our arrival at Mom’s were different. Anabel was more open, more willing to share her thoughts and feelings. She still had her moments of intensity, but there was a softness now, a vulnerability that made our partnership stronger.
During one of our site inspections, as we debated the best placement for a challenge arena, I noticed the change in her approach. Instead of dictating, she asked for my opinion, genuinely considering my input.
"You know," I said, leaning against a tree, "I think this spot near the waterfall would be amazing for a Water-type challenge. The natural setting would really highlight their abilities."
Anabel nodded thoughtfully. "I agree. It’s perfect." She smiled at me, and it wasn’t the calculating smile I’d grown accustomed to. It was genuine, warm.
As we continued our work, the ease between us grew. She still sent me texts, but they were supportive, encouraging. The possessiveness had given way to a partnership built on mutual respect.
One evening, after a long day, we sat by the campfire, the stars twinkling above us. The flames flickered and danced, casting a warm glow over us.
"Thank you, Ash," she said softly, breaking the comfortable silence. "For understanding, for being patient."
I shrugged, feeling a bit embarrassed. "We’re a team, Anabel. And teams look out for each other."
She laughed, a sound that was becoming more familiar. "Yes, we are. And I wouldn’t have it any other way."
I glanced at her, the firelight reflecting in her eyes. There was something different tonight, a calmness I hadn't seen before. "Can I ask you something?" I ventured.
"Of course," she replied, her tone inviting.
"Why did you decide to become my advisor?" I asked. It was a question that had been gnawing at me for a while.
Anabel sighed, looking into the flames. "After my time in the Ultra Wormhole, I felt... lost. I needed something, someone, to ground me. When I saw your battles, your spirit, I knew you were what I needed. Not just as a project, but as a person. You remind me of what I used to be."
Her words hung in the air, heavy with emotion. I reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You’re still that person, Anabel. You’ve just been through a lot. But you’re strong. Stronger than you think."
She smiled, a genuine, heartfelt smile. "Thank you, Ash. That means more than you know."
As I looked into the fire, I felt a sense of peace. The challenges ahead were still daunting, but with Anabel by my side, I knew we could face them together. And maybe, just maybe, we’d both find the balance we were looking for.
