September 17th, 2008. Yokohama Hospital. 9:53 AM.
The sobs wracking your body are a small window into the pain you feel as the sounds of the sterile room begin to fade, replaced by ringing in your ears. The warmth leaves your father's body as you sob over his hospital bed, begging him to cling to life although your pleas are met with silence.
Doctors and nurses begin to trickle out of the room as they mark his time of passing, leaving you the space to mourn. A curtain is pulled around the small hospital bed, separating you from the young boy sitting alongside his mother in the space behind you. You can only hope the dread you felt in that moment as your father's presence faded, to be replaced only by memories, isn't a feeling the young boy would experience at such a young age.
"I miss you, dad."
The silence following your weak and broken words is louder somehow than the commotion of trying to keep his consciousness with you only a few minutes ago. The quiet air weighs you down and threatens to drown you with every waking moment.
"I'd give anything to have you back," you whisper through broken weeps.
Leaning over the bed, you're oblivious to the sudden commotion restarting in the room outside the curtain. The deafening ringing in your ears, the tears blinding you, your world crumbling around you, it's all too much and you almost don't notice when your father's finger twitches beneath you. Blinking away your tears, you slowly sit up, shaking hands staring at his fingers, which grow warmer somehow within your grasp. Your eyes trail slowly towards the monitor hooked up to your father as it beeps and all you can do is stare in disbelief. How can what you're witnessing even be possible? He remains still, but warmth floods his body once more.
As hope floods your grief-filled body, you become suddenly aware of the commotion around you, the nurses and doctors flooding the room behind you in an effort to save the boy's mother behind you, but she's already gone, as quickly as your father had returned.
Your emotions feel like a physical weight dragging you down as you dare to poke your head through the curtain that cordons your father off. As the noise dies down around the family behind you, it picks up again where your father is, now that his monitor has restarted.
Puzzled, you find yourself unable to do anything but stare at the poor young boy, clinging to his mother and weeping helplessly. What leaves you truly puzzled is the strange residue that lingers both in the air and around the woman's body, and around your father. It's indescribable, like some sort of smoke, yet it clings to her like a net.
'That is cursed energy,' a detached, somewhat feminine voice claims.
Startled, you jump to your feet and fling yourself around to face- no one? Nurses work tirelessly around your father as they test and monitor his status, but none of them seem to be paying you any mind aside from the occasional strange look. The majority of their focus is poured into your miraculously revived father.
'I apologize, I did not intend to scare you,' the voice, one of a calm and gentle demeanor, speaks once more. Your eyes scan the room again, but you can't identify the source no matter how hard you try. You aren't even certain where the voice is coming from, almost as though it's in your mind.
Holding your head in confusion as it begins to pound in pain, you stumble back to the chair beside your dad's bedside, groaning as it feels as though someone is pulling your consciousness from your own body. Opening your eyes in an effort to make a desperate plea for help to one of the nurses, your vision blurs, a white light blinding you before you can so much as think, and you find yourself suddenly whisked away from the waking world.
