Ayla hears Rick and Carl's shouts of horror but she pays no mind to them as she attempts to pry her body away from Shane to no avail. She gasps for air as she pushes the man's face away from her shoulder but her hands are too slick with blood to get a good grip on him. Heavy footsteps near her and then suddenly the gnawing at her skin comes to a stop once Rick plunges his knife into Shane's head.
Ayla's mind is a ball of confusion as she tries to figure out what just happened. Why did Shane just use his last living moments to bite her? She is sobbing as blood flows freely from the wound on her neck. Rick stares at it in shock and then looks at her face in devastation. "No, no, no, no, no..." He pleads as he applies pressure on it.
Carl knees beside her and Ayla allows her body to be pulled across his lap as Rick frantically assesses her. "Dad!" Carl cries out. "Why did Shane do that?" He asks panickedly.
Rick doesn't answer. He only looks about helplessly as if he needs some sort of miracle to happen. "Rick?" Ayla asks worriedly, her eyes full of trepidation. "Is it bad? Am I going to be okay?" The look on Ricks face is unsettling to her. He's staring at her as if she's some type of talking corpse.
The wound must look worse than it feels, then. Maybe I'm in some sort of shock which is making the pain duller. Maybe I'm dying.
And yeah, she probably does look like the picture of death if the amount of blood that covers her body says anything. She imagined the wound would need a hell of a lot of stitching but she didn't think it was anything too severe. Although, it does hurt like a bitch, sending so much pain throughout her body that it feels as if she's on fire. However, she doesn't think Shane ripped out a large enough chunk of skin to do any long-term damage so why is Rick so...
Time stops.
Abruptly, she is pulled into a memory from many months ago.
She is sitting at a large oak dining table, luxurious food spread across it grandly. Her mother is on one side of her, offering her a sweet smile, and her grandparents are on the other. They are all scarfing down the meal.
Dr. Jenner sits at the head of the table.
"You mentioned earlier that you are doing research on the virus." Ayla's mother states politely. "Have you found anything of use?" She wonders as she cuts her steak into small pieces and pops it into her mouth.
