Once upon a time, a greedy, but just, king decided to see the future of Aurorise, his kingdom known for magic and fairies and beautiful rose bushes. His wife was with child and he decided that he wanted to know what was in store for his blossoming family. To do so, he hired a powerful fortune teller who could tell the future.
"You will have a son." She started.
"He shall take after me, then." The king said.
"He looks just like your wife." The sorceress said, eyes turning green. The queen smiled big, showing all of her beautiful big teeth.
The king huffed, "Any more significant information?"
"Ah, yes, I see something." The fortune teller's eyes widened.
"What is it?" The queen worriedly put a hand to her stomach.
"Your son will be very capable. He has the gift of magic. Does that run in the Na family?" The sorceress looked to the King.
"I'm not sure. There is no one I can remember." The king frowned, looking to his wife.
"I'm not sure either." She said immediately, shrugging.
"I sense a very good heart. He is very handsome and charming. He would make a very good king but..."
"But? Spit it out. What is it?" The king became impatient.
"I'm sorry but your son will become cursed. I can not see much. I'm not sure why, but it happens after he pricks his finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel," She paused, closing her eyes, "He will die soon after." The sorceress waited for the reaction.
"Why? How do I prevent this?" The king said, rising from his throne.
"I would recommend looking for powerful fairies to come and bless the child when he is born. They may be able to ease the curse. However, there is no way to completely reverse it. It is destined. Your son will prick his finger and something must happen. It may be reversible. I can not see far enough. You must gather the most powerful fairies you can find."
So, the king prepared for the day of his son's birth. His son was presented to the kingdom, but at a distance, for his parents were protective of him. If he was to be cursed, they would try whatever they could to prevent any harm. The fairies were allowed close enough.
"I have a very special gift for prince Jaemin." Donghyuck stood close, youthful as ever, since faeries aged slowly, "He will grow more beautiful with age. He will have the gift of beauty." The queen smiled and bowed to Dongyuck who bowed back, displaying the small flowers growing in his hair, then walked off.
"Why is that useful?" Chenle muttered to Donghyuck, who stuck his tongue out. Though Donghyuck was excellent at magic, his specialties were not in protection. Chenle stepped up to the throne.
"I would like to bestow prince Jaemin with the gift of spirit. He will have a strong spirit, a fighting spirit. He will remain hopeful in hard times. I have no doubt it will help him get out of tough situations." Chenle said, placing his finger on the baby's nose, then letting the next fairy walk up.
"Lame." Donghyuck whisper-shouted.
Thunder was heard outside of the castle, causing the queen to jolt in her seat, and suddenly, it was raining.
"What a beautiful baby. It seems the gifts are already taking effect." An older woman, around her thirties, stepped up to the throne, "Let's see, I shall bestow him with the gift of sleep, plenty of it," she laughed.
The king frowned, "What do you mean?"
"Well everything has a price doesn't it, queen?" the woman questioned, "Dear Jaemin will be a perfectly healthy and beautiful child, but once he turns 20, I shall take his soul back. I only let you borrow it. On his 21st birthday, he will prick his finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and his soul will belong to me."
"Please, don't do this. You never told me about this." The queen pleaded.
"What is she talking about?" The king demanded.
"Don't worry! He is your son." The woman waved to the king, "He's got your blood and everything. He just has some other extra things I might have spilled. Oopsies." The woman joked, pressing her finger to the baby's forehead.
"Stop her!" The king commanded the guards.
"It's too late. I've already done all I needed to do." The woman winked up to the queen.
"What is this about?" The king angrily turned to his wife.
"I promise you, I didn't know."
The queen pulled the king aside and explained the inexplicable deed she had committed. She had consulted dark magic to help her conceive. The queen had not been able to conceive. Her and the king had always wanted a child. She was tricked. An evil witch manipulated her into giving up her child without knowing. The queen promised she hadn't known for the witch had disguised herself as a fairy.
"What are we going to do?" The king yelled at his wife. She flinched.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't know." She cried.
"Um..." Someone cleared their throat.
The king turned to see one last fairy standing in line. He frowned as the fairy came close to his son. He wasn't sure who to trust anymore. Huang Renjun was known for his protection spells. He was very intelligent, so the king found an ounce of hope and let Renjun come close, his blue wings on full display and baby's breath in his hair.
"He has potential of magic. Whatever the old hag did to him left traces of the properties needed for magic. He only needs it to be unlocked, or that's the best way I can explain it to a human." Huang Renjun looked up.
"Can you do it?" The king looked at him carefully.
Renjun shook his head, "He'll need to do it himself, but I can help him learn as soon as he's a little older. He'll need to study constantly so that he can reach his full potential before the age of 21."
"Would you mind if I hold off on my gift? I think I could try to help him reverse the spell or delay it, but I would like to teach him magic and become stronger myself."
The king blinked then nodded to Renjun. He had no other option. He had been given a possible solution, and he would take it.
"Then let's celebrate! The prince was just born and Renjunnie will break the spell!" Donghyuck cheered. The crowd slowly started clapping, directing their attention on Renjun who gave Donghyuck a burning look.
"I said try." Renjun muttered.
The party went on with lots of gossip, surely the reputation of Aurorise was tainted, as the King and Queen stepped to the side to discuss. They were in a heated argument until the queen of Briarvale walked up to the two, holding her baby, who had been born only 4 months prior.
"Don't you think you should be cherishing your baby after such a scare?" The queen stood looking down at the crib, holding her baby closely who started swaying his hands to the baby in front of him, "What do you think, Jeno?" She cooed, letting her baby get a closer look, "Isn't he such a beauty." Jeno made cooing noises, waving his hands towards the newborn.
The newborn looked up, blinking as he was falling asleep. It was a little sad really. The queen of Briarvale stroked the baby's cheek. The poor thing had no idea what was coming. She couldn't imagine what that would have been like if it had been her precious baby.
"You're right," The queen started, picking up baby Jaemin from his crib and hugging him close to her chest. She pressed a kiss to his head.
"We'll have to send him away to somewhere safe as soon as he stops breastfeeding." The king spoke, holding his family for a moment, then walking off to speak to the fairies.
"I always dreamed our children would be betrothed." Jaemin's mother said, "Now I guess I've ruined everything. I should have known it was too good to be true. Now, I won't even get to watch him grow up."
"Not all hope is lost. Don't worry. It will all work out. Your son will be back home before you know it. I think we can trust the fairies to do their job. They have protected your kingdom for generations." The queen of Briarvale said, stroking her friend's shoulder. Then, she laughed, her eyes disappearing in glee, as her son seemed so entertained by the new baby.
