She spun and swayed despite their gawks.
Though, surely they did leer.
The quaint notes of a music box.
A song that only she could hear.A melody that struck her heart.
Her limbs moving of their own accord.
When did this jig even start?
When had they gathered around her in a horde? She couldn't cry out nor speak a word
For all she could do was dance.
Her flaunting about, although absurd
It was as if she was in a trance.People gathered to see this strange sight
Of a woman dancing madly in the street
She danced and danced on through the night
Her frolic was never quite complete.Hour upon hour, day upon day.
She simply couldn't stop.
Still putting on her whimsical display.
Until she would finally drop.Exhaustion felled her muscles only for a spot.
Before she was back up once again.
She returned once more to her trot.
In front of all the men.She wished so badly it would end.
Sweat dripped from her in such heat.
It wasn't long before her flesh would rend.
Strips of skin falling from her feet.As blood smeared about her performance
Tracing all over the ground.
The response was now enormous
From the people all around. They took hold of her in restraint
To keep her from further injury
But even though exhaustion allowed her to faint
Her limbs still moved ever so gingerlyOnce she was released at last
Again, the dancing took her
A spell, a curse, a hex was cast
This movement that overtook herShe wouldn't, couldn't seize control
As if she had been possessed
The men gathered for their common goal
She'd dance until there was nothing leftThis time, they took her and strapped her down
Although she did still thrash
They had to clear her from this town
Even if it meant to make her ash"A witch!" They cried out in their fear
"This curse will spread to all of us!"
"We must make her disappear!"
"Turn her into dust!"They put her to the flames for cleansing
Though still, never did she shout
As she burned, her dance commencing
With the flames now leaping all aboutHer bones remained with charred embers
Now swaying in the wind
A night everyone remembers
Of the dancing that wouldn't end
