Part ~ 2

𝐔𝐦𝐞'𝐬 𝐏𝐎𝐕:

It's been about a month since y/n has been staying here at the orphanage, and by now she's gotten pretty well-adjusted to this place.
I'm glad.
She's actually pretty chill, and usually stays quiet when she's with everyone.
She's just kinda.. there, like, well, she seems to like everyone but she just doesn't talk to people much most of the time, unless it's a one-on-one convo.
And I guess she didn't expect me to actually hang around her and accompany her everywhere, but she doesn't seem to mind, so whatever.

Now it's like 5 PM on a Saturday evening and we're just walking outside for some fresh air.
It's nice outside, cloudy, cool, and there's a chilly breeze blowing.
Y/n's walking ahead of me, both hands in her pants pockets, and I'm just blindly following her.
She suddenly stops in her tracks and turns back to face me.

"Why do you keep following me around everywhere?
It's wierd."

She asks, her voice a bit more monotone than usual.
Okay, maybe she does mind.

"Oh, is it?
Well, there's no real reason that I can think of as why..
Oh, wait, maybe I can.
I just think you're cool!
And I wanna be friends with you!
And mainly 'cause you're the only one in the orphange who isn't younger than me, so I figured it would be more relatable hanging with you, too.
Isn't that a good enough reason?"

She deadass stares at me, and I can't understand if she's glaring at me or just staring in confusion.
Maybe it's both?
I don't think I've said anything that wasn't clear, have I?
She speaks up again, now visibly confused.

"Huh..
You.. think I'm cool?
Really?"

"Yeah, really.
And since you're staying at Furinen anyways, and we're the same age, which makes it easier to be friends, so what good would it be to not wanna get closer to you?"

"Hm..
Yeah, no thanks."

Huh?!
She turns her head forward and starts walking again, without waiting for me to catch up.
I quickly run behind her till we're walking side by side again.

"Eh?!
Why not?"

"I mean, you're nice and all, but I don't wanna get too attached.
We're at an orphanage.
There's a chance someone's gonna adopt either of us anytime, or there might be a switch.
I've already dealt with that once, and I don't wanna risk it again.
But I don't think you'll take that as an answer, so I have a question for you.
If that does happen, what then?"

"What then?
Well, if we're staying in this town even after, hypothetically, being adopted, then I don't really see why we couldn't keep being friends.
It's not like it's gonna be a problem as long as we live nearby."

Her eyes widen a bit, as she turns her head to look at me again.
She turns her head back and looks down for a moment.

"I guess that makes sense.."

She sighs.

"Then..
I guess I can give friendship with you a shot."

A pause.

"You happy now?"

Oh, she doesn't even know how happy I am right now.

"Yeah!
That's great!
Wait, I have an idea.
I know a special scenic spot we can go to.
It's just a bit of a walk.
But you can do that, let's go."

I grab onto her hand and start walking a bit faster, practically dragging her along with me.
She yelps when I pull her along, speeding up her pace so as not to trip.

"Wait, slow down!
And let go of my hand..
I can walk by myself just fine.."

"Nah, it's fine, just keep walking.
You'll realise once we reach that it's worth it.
Now come on."

She reluctantly tightens her grip on my hand as well, and I lead her along the road and we reach a small hill, and I take her up to the top, tight under a really large tree.
I stop and let go of her hand, as she looks confused yet again.

"Uh..
You said you'll take me somewhere special.
What's so special about a huge tree on some hill?"

"Well, the sunset looks really great from up here!
We just have to wait a bit.
Till then, wanna go grab some snacks and bring them up here?
It'll be really fun eating something yummy with a lovely view in front of us.
You down for it?"

"Sure..
The sun's gonna set soon.
Let's just go buy a few packets of chips and come up again."

"Okay!
Let's go!"

I grab her hand again and take her down the hill, and this time she actually cooperates.
We search around and find a convenience store.
Oh, wait, shit, I just realized I don't have any cash with me.
I stop right in front of the entrance and turn back to look at her.

"Uhm..
Do you have any money on you?"

God, this is so awkward..

"Yeah, I do.
Just get inside before it gets too late.
It'll still take time to go back uphill."

"Yeah, yeah, I know.."

She walks inside first and goes to the snacks aisle, and grabs a few packets of Cream and Onion flavoured chips.

"Are these alright?"

I nod.

"Mhm."

She takes the packets and puts them on the payment counter.
The cashier rings them up and she pays.
I take the small plastic bag that the chips are in as we both walk out.

"Sorry for making you pay..
I'll treat you some other time."

"Nah, you don't have to.
It's fine.
Let's just go back to the tree."

And we do exactly that.
By the time we walk back uphill, the sun's already beginning to lower.
Perfect timing.
We sit down under the tree and take one packet of chips each, opening and eating them.
Y/n's silent most of the time, just staring at the sunset while eating.
She slowly gets up and finally speaks again.

"You were right, the sunset really does look amazing from this height.
Thanks for bringing me here today."

"No problem.
Should we get going now?
It's getting late."

"Yeah, let's go."

We both walk downhill, and once we're near the road we start walking a bit faster till we reach the orphanage, finally.
Sensei sees us walk in and I can hear him let out a sigh of relief.
He walks out into the main hall where y/n puts her shoes up in the rack while I'm still taking mine off.

"Goodness, where were you two?!
Where did you go for so long?"

What time is it?
Y/n speaks up before I can ask.

"We went for a walk."

"An almost two hour long walk?"

It's 7 PM already?

"Yeah.
We ate some snacks too."

"At least the both of you are okay.
That's a relief.
But next time, don't go wandering off like that for so long without telling me first, alright?"

We both reply in unison;

"Alright."
