Chapter 4: "Eyes, the window to the soul"

At last, after the trio's hard work, their hearts raced as they stood on the brink of reaping what they had sown. Wednesday marked the beginning of the Preliminary rounds for the Prefecturals, a grueling five-day event culminating on Sunday with the final round.

Every sleepless night was worth it, the due day was inching no further than an hour away. Wednesday dawned with a crispness that seemed to amplify the gravity of the day. After all what was prepared, [Name] was perfectly confident that they would win. To be honest, she too came to be excited and giddy for the game.

But... there was something, going terribly wrong.

[Name] had orchestrated every detail to perfection, yet when she woke at the fresh hour of 7 AM, a sense of dread washed over her. The roof of her tongue was horrendously dry, yet cold sweat wet the back of her shirt. In short, she felt horribly sick.

The day began with an ominous sign:[Name] stepped out of her house when her confidence was abruptly shattered by the sight of a black cat slinking across her path.

Brushing off the superstitious omen, she continued on her way, only to find herself walking directly under a ladder.

The final straw came when she was combing her hair in Reo's sleek limousine, and the comb snapped in her hand.

"Hey, [Name]... don't you think that's one too many signs?" The purple haired boy speaks up, face filled with dread.

She chuckled nervously, a laughter that she used as a fragile veneer over her unease. "What do you mean?" she replied, though her eyes betrayed her as they darted away, avoiding his concerned gaze as if the morning air could ease her. It seemed as if beads of sweat were cascading like tiny waterfalls from her forehead.

He patted her shoulder gently, offering a small, reassuring smile. "It's okay. I saw a spider in my room last night and couldn't bring myself to kill it. Then this morning, I accidentally stepped on one."

Seishiro joined their conversation, looking a little guilty. "I... clipped my nails last night and threw them away. Then I stuck my chopsticks upright on a bowl of rice 'cuz I got lazy."

"If anything goes wrong today, we're blaming that on you. You chose to DO that, we didn't." Reo pointed a finger accusingly to the tall albino.

"So you're telling me that you guys INFECTED me with your bad luck? I'm tired," [Name] groaned, shifting in her seat as she rummaged through the smaller pockets of her purse. She finally pulled out a red pen dramatically. "That's it, Nagi, I'm writing your name in my death note!"

Seishiro slumped, his shoulders sagging with exaggerated despair. Being blamed was one thing, but [Name] calling him by his last name stung. He pouted childishly, tugging at the edge of her sleeve in a silent plea for forgiveness.

"Going over that," she placed the pen back in her bag. "Did you guys sleep well? We're fighting against the prefectural champions of last year here." The manager asks them despite having extreme dark circles herself.

"W-well... I was so excited and nervous that I couldn't sleep," Reo admitted, scratching his cheek, his eyes mirroring her exhaustion.

"I was playing Roblox all night, so I didn't sleep," Nagi added nonchalantly.
