1: Homesick
.
.
A few months ago...
"Ugh," a certain orange curled up in one corner, hugging his knees, earphones plugged in, blasting off j-pop nonstop. "I miss home." The foreign orange looked up, realizing that his roommate had gone to class, leaving him alone to woe by himself.
Before leaving Nippon, Shoyo only felt determined to improve his skills. It never hit him how much he'd miss home the moment he landed on this side of the world. The air smelled different, the people were different, the culture shock he experienced almost made Shoyo pack up and rush back to his country.
God.
He missed the cold mornings and warm breakfast waiting for him at the table whenever he woke up. I miss mom. I miss Natsu. Heck, I even miss bantering with Kageyama. Shoyo blinked back the tears that threatened to fall, obviously failing when he had to wipe a few drops clean.
"Maybe I should go on a run to keep myself busy." If he stayed put any longer, he might keep thinking of home and his resolve would just pop like a balloon. So, this orange in a foreign country hyped himself up, picked up his waist bag, wore his running shoes, fixed his cap, made sure that his sunglasses were on, and ran through his usual route.
The sun felt brighter on this side of the world. That's why Shoyo, who didn't have a habit of putting on sunscreen, now had a shelf full of them. Some were tried and abandoned, because they weren't effective at all. Sometimes, he would go home with a nasty burn and it would be difficult to move around for a few days.
Fortunately, Pedro was there to help him, even though they couldn't understand each other that well.
Shoyo continued his run, thinking about the things he encountered since arriving here.
Today was his day off, perhaps that's why he had more than enough time to think about so many things. About how his friends were doing, about how he missed the taste of home, about how he missed waking up in the morning with the chirping birds to greet him.
His eyes suddenly felt like they were burning, so Shoyo blinked back his tears and ran even faster to get his mind off things.
It's been six months but he still hasn't adapted to living on his own in a foreign country.
...
I lost my wallet!
It felt like the world crumbled when Shoyo realized that. All his money, his IDs, and other important things were inside that wallet.
What was he supposed to do now?!
The days passed by in a blink of an eye as a withered orange spent those days in a daze. The feeling of homesickness grew stronger, and he felt even lonelier as he couldn't make a proper conversation with anyone.
I want to go home.
Shoyo didn't know how he was roped into playing beach volleyball all of a sudden when all he did was give that group of people the ball back, but he found himself in a familiar yet strange setting. The feeling of the ball hitting his forearms felt nostalgic but the sand beneath his feet was unfamiliar.
But the more he played, the more his loneliness diminished.
The more he played, the more his lips curled into a smile.
The more he played, the more he was reminded of the reason why he came to this country in the first place.
He loved volleyball.
