On Harry's eleventh birthday, as he sat nursing his latest collection of bruises, a miracle arrived. A letter, thick and heavy, addressed to him in perfect script: "Mr. H. Potter, The Cupboard under the Stairs." He had never received a letter before. His heart pounded as he tore it open. The letter was from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry's eyes widened as he read the words. Magic? A school where he could learn to use his abilities? He hardly dared to believe it. But before he could fully comprehend, Uncle Vernon snatched the letter away, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. "We're not having any of that freakish nonsense in this house!" Vernon roared, tearing the letter into shreds. But the letters kept coming, each more persistent than the last, until finally, on the night before his departure, a giant of a man named Hagrid burst through the door, demanding to take Harry away.
