"A few more miles and we'll be there," said Connor, glancing at Judy, who was sitting holding her knees to her chest, staring out the window.
Judy hadn't said anything since he'd told her what the Mule had done to Big's Gram-mama. He'd wanted to kick himself for telling her as soon as the words had left his mouth. She had enough to worry about without piling that news on top of everything else she'd been through today.
"I heard Bogo say you've been to this place before," Judy whispered.
"My rookie year, I volunteered for an undercover case investigating a gang that was targeting interspecies couples. They'd watch the bars here in Tundra Town, and when they spotted an inter couple, they'd send them a message with a beating.
"They'd try to make it look like a mugging, but it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what they really wanted."
"What was your undercover assignment, infiltration of the gang?"
"No, Bogo asked me to partner up with a third-year Officer from Precinct 6, we were set up as a couple, makeup, clothes, the whole nine yards, and then we spent about two weeks hanging out at bars waiting for the gang to make their move on us."
Perking up a bit, Judy replied, "Wow, not too many rookies get picked for something like that."
"Well, not too many officers are willing to pretend they're in an interspecies relationship. Bogo already knew about Olivia, so picking me was a no brainer, and the girl I was partnered with had dated a hyena in college, so we were able to fake it well enough to attract the attention the ZPD wanted."
Judy nodded, "Nice, what species was she, the girl they partnered you with?"
"Uh, she was a lioness."
Judy put a paw up to her muzzle and said, "Oh, no. Two weeks, bar hopping with another feline, how did that go over with Olivia?"
Connor cringed, "Not well. When the case was over, she spent an hour scrubbing my fake girlfriend's scent out of my fur and then..." smiling now, "I missed two days of work because she wouldn't let me out of bed. Best time I've ever had."
Chuckling a little, Judy unwound herself in the front seat and said, "Connor, TMI, I can't believe you said that."
Glad Judy was in a better mood, Pawson leaned over and mock whispered, "That's not all. She marked me so thoroughly I was assigned solo foot patrol for a week because no one could stand to be around me."
Judy hummed at the thought of marking a certain someone, and then asked, "Have you guys ever claimed each other?"
"You've heard of that, have you? Not something I'd expect most prey to know or care about." And then seeing Judy squirm a little in her seat, Connor continued, "Claiming isn't as big a thing for felines as it is for canids, but, yeah, after our commitment ceremony and again after my undercover assignment was over, Olivia and I claimed each other.
"It's one of the things I love about Olivia. I didn't ask her, I wasn't even planning on bringing it up, but both times, it was something she really wanted to do."
"That's so sweet."
"Yeah it was, although she doesn't know her own strength sometimes. I couldn't lift my arm above my shoulder for almost a week after her first claiming bite."
"TMI," Judy laughed again, "way, way too much information."
Connor turned into a snow-covered neighborhood and then casually asked, "So, any particular reason you're so curious about canid mating habits?"
