I open the door to my apartment to see Hendrix standing there in a white shirt, rolled up to his elbows, and black dress pants. The outfit was as simple as a daily corporate worker's. But something made it look surreal, made him look surreal.
He was looking down at his phone, fingers typing away. He was so absorbed in his work that he didn't look up until I cleared my throat. He looks up from his phone to meet my eyes. Suddenly all the air in my lungs disappear, like it got vapourized or something. I start to breathe through mouth to get oxygen into my system. What is wrong with me, I should probably get a check up from the hospital.
"Let's go, shall we" I say , my voice coming out a little too breathless for my liking. " Well certainly" he says pushing himself off the wall. We walk towards the lift, our steps in odd unison. The hallway felt stuffy for the first time, as for it sheer size.
We get on the lift. As I go to press the first floor, Hendrix stops me. "One second" he says, brushing past me to press the button. He shifts back to his place, leaving the smell of smoke and spice in his wake. an odd sensation filled my chest.
We rode the lift in pure tensioned silence. It stretched so thick between us that it felt like a blanket was draped over us. The lift dinged in response that we reached the garage. He walked out first. After he exited the lift he pressed his keys to unlock the car.
The car dings in response to getting unlocked. I look toward the car. It's electric blue colour made it stand out in the poorly lit garage. The engine roared to life, making me jump a bit. Hendrix is already in the car. I quickly walk over to the other side. As I go, I lightly brush the body of the car. This is the first time I have seen the 55,000 dollar car. I reach the handel and open it.
"Like what you see?", Hendrix says, a knowing smirk spread across his lips. "The car is nice but you..." I responded, faking a nervous laugh. I look around the car. The interior was quite different from what I imagined. The seats where covered in a dark sophisticated leather. It was a stark contrast to the bright electric blue exterior of the car.
I was looking around at the interior. When suddenly Hendrix leaned toward me. He was as so close I could feel his warmth. His shirt hung loosely wich gave a perfect view of his torso, which I didn't venture. The tension in the car was louder that the hum of the car engine. Green eyes clashed with brown. I was about to lean away, when he grabbed hold of the seatbelt and pulled it out. "Gotta wear your seatbelt" he says, clasping my seatbelt.
Oh my god
He went back to his seat like he didn't just make my heart race 15 km/h. THIS IS SO EMBARRASSING! He was just looking out for me. Sabrina, get weird thoughs out of your head. Why did I even sit at the passenger seat.
I was saved from my embarrassment by a phone call. I look at the ID and immediately pick it up. "How is his condition?" I ask, panic snakeing through my body. " His vitals are fine, we are assuming it's his asthma but can't confirm. He's not letting anyone close to him. We might have to give him a control shot if we can't get close to him" Sara says from the other line. There is many sounds coming from the other line. The scream of a kid's voice, many murmus, all the souns make my anxiety go even higher.
"But he's a kid, shots given to patients under 18 might effect their nervous system" I say remember that caution. Well if we don't do it we might not have the patient" she says, trying to make me understand. This is the part of being a doctor I don't like. Were there is the logical thing to do but it would also deteriorat the patient mentally and emotionally.
But your job is to save them, not worry what happens after.
The voices in my head started to argue. "Miss Windser?" Came Sara's voice through all the other ones. That's when I made up my mind. Oh I hope I will make it in time. " Hold him off for a little longer, I'll be there" I say, my tone full of conformation, even though my conscious wasn't.
There was a pause on the other line. Sara was thinking if she should or not. Then she let out a sigh and said,"ok Miss Windser". I cut the call to look at Hendrix. "So how fast does this thing go?" I say, my tone lining a hint of mischief and seriousness. "How fast do you need it to go" he says, smirking. "Well 10 minutes would be best, Concord hospital" I say, knowing that's not possible. The hospital's like 2 hours from the apartment.
"Hold on tight" Hendrix says, clenching the steering wheel. The veins of his hands become more vivid.
Oh I hope I don't regret this.
