Odin's POV:
I saw the fear in his eyes.
I suppose he could sense the tragedy that had befallen upon his kingdom. His people. The son of Laufey, left to die alone just as the many of his people did. Was he crying for his fate, or was it the heart of a Prince that mourned his people? A mere child; he could tell, couldn't he? Today he was stripped of his title as a Prince, a son and a Jotun, all at once. He was nameless.
Odin couldn't take his eyes off the baby in his arms. He was so fragile, so innocent. How could one have the heart to leave such a vulnerable being to its fate? He examines the baby with his eyes as well as he could. There was no mistake; the pale blue skin, the deep red eyes; it had to be the son of Laufey. If not for just one thing. The child was as small as the young one of a mortal. Not a mortal though, for he resembled his father too much.
A loud thud from outside the temple causes the Baby to begin to wail. Tears begin to stream down his face as he tries to push Odin away. Odin found it a bit more difficult to handle him than his own son. He wouldn't calm down. Odin sits on the steps of the temple and begins to cradle him. He was never good at this, but often observed his wife doing the same. And then he begins to hum, just as his wife would with their own child. Her singing could calm down turbulent oceans, but as for Odin, he only ever knew how to command with his voice.
As Odin sings to the child, he begins to think of the consequences his actions inflicted. Was he to be blamed for not just him, but the many children's fate, who were now orphaned? What could he have done different when it was the Jotuns who attacked first, who declared war against his people? As king, he had to do what the situation demanded, even if it meant making the difficult decisions, even if it meant taking on the guilt of the thousands of lives lost. He had to do what needed to be done.
Odin breaks out of his thoughts when he notices the baby had stopped crying. He was holding on to the old man's finger while he slept so peacefully. If the time would stop right at this moment, Odin wouldn't be one to complain. He saw his own child in the face of this baby he held in his arms. So different, yet so alike. He gently kisses the forehead of the baby, and carefully lays him down on the sacred floor. The wisest king of all, needed some counsel. What was he to do with him? Take him to his kingdom? If he did, was he to introduce him as his own? While the kingdom had not long ago rejoiced the birth of his son, what was he to tell his people? How could this blue skinned orphan, be an Odinson? How would they ever see him as the prince of Asgard? He picks the child again, and looks at him one more time. His mind is crowded by thoughts of nothing but hardships for the child.
No one will ever see him beyond his appearance. He'll be doomed; forced to live a life which would challenge his will to live at every step of the way. If I take him with me, I'll bring a tragedy upon him that I would never be able to save him from. Perhaps, if Laufey ever came back looking for him, It could be the means to end an enmity that carried on for ages, but, beyond that, what purpose, could the existence of the son of Laufey, serve in my land?
He saw nothing but darkness, and with that, the fatherly instinct of Odin to take this child under his wings, faltered too. He knew, as King, he had to be reasonable. He couldn't let emotions cloud his judgement. The baby opens his eyes to see the King of Asgard once again. This time he is calm, as he could see the man who had saved his life. A smile on his face, the baby feels safe with him. As his deep red eyes continue to look at the King with admiration, the blue of his skin begins to fade; his skin, now similar to an Asgardian's and his eyes, similar to the King's, with a pond of green in the middle. There was no longer any fear in his eyes. Odin could only see a child, who wished for someone to love and care for him, for the child had enough love in his heart to offer them as well.
{This was only an introduction to the story, so it is a bit short, and there's no dialogues, but once the story progresses, I'll add a lot more. Thank you for reading the first chapter! Hope you liked it :)}
