~The touch of a hand lit the fuse~

I grab the freshly made espresso and pour it into a mug, then use the frothed cream to make a little heart. I reach for the receipt from the machine to read the name of who this coffee belongs to.

"Jess?" I call out sliding the mug over the counter, not looking up as the person reaches for the cup. He grabs my fingers accidentally as he remains distracted as well.

We both look up at the same time and I quickly pull my hand back when I realize he's actually pretty cute.

This wouldn't have been awkward if he wasn't attractive.

"Sorry about that." He says with the smallest smirk at the corner of his lips.

"It's fine," I laugh. "Oh hey, nice book you're reading."

He looks down at the book he holds in his hands, it's a romance book I read a couple weeks ago. You don't see many boys reading romances anymore.

"Have you read it?" He asks.

"I just read it like a month ago, it's a pretty good one." I answer. "The end is quite the whirl though, I've got to warn you."

"Oh man, that's practically a spoiler." He scoffs with a sly smile.

"No, because you don't know if it's a good or bad ending, I'm merely getting you more hyped for this book." I laugh.

He shrugs. "Okay, I'll give you that."

The bell rings and I frown as I look over at the woman with her arms crossed. She couldn't have been there for too long as the door opened only a minute ago, she's just very impatient. I look at Jess and shrug, before he turns around and makes his way to the sofa to enjoy his coffee.

I sigh before taking my place back at the register to receive all the punishment this woman thinks I deserve in the form of yelling and insults.

~

"Babette, I got your latte!" I yell over the counter to one of our regulars.

"Thank you, doll!" She says as she takes it and sits on one of the window stools.

I smile at her before turning around to take the register, and of course, my coworkers are doing nothing but sitting around again. I sigh as I tap a couple buttons on the screen to start a new order, then look up surprised when I see my customer.

"You again," I start. "How are you liking the book?"

"That's actually what I'm here to talk about." He chuckles. "Someone failed to mention to me that he dies? You're a terrible person for letting me read this."

I giggle. "You said no spoilers." I shrug.

"There's a fine line between spoilers and looking out for a friend."

"To be fair, I didn't know we were friends yet either." I smirk arrogantly.

"First you let a book break my heart, then you won't even let me be your friend. What an evil girl." He scoffs, as I begin putting his latte from yesterday into the register, assuming it's his regular.

"I didn't take you for being so dramatic," I laugh as I pour the espresso grounds into the portafilter, peaking up at him to see a hurt expression.

"You just love seeing people in pain, don't you?" He asks with a smirk.

"I can't help it, you're just fun to mess with I guess." I laugh, pouring the espresso over milk and sliding it over to him.

"You do make a mean latte though, I'll give you that." He says as he reaches in his back pocket. "How much do I owe you?"

"It's on me today, as long as you promise to show up again tomorrow," I grin but immediately catch myself. "to recommend another book, of course."

"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow then, for the book of course."

"I guess so."

~

"Can you bring these crepes to the couple at the windows please?" I ask my coworker, as I hand him the two pastry filled plates. He takes it in an annoyed manner, but does it anyway.

I huff and roll my eyes as I turn to meet the register again. My face immediately brightens as I see my guest.

"My, what have I done to deserve such a beautiful smile?" He teases as the expression on my face becomes a glare.

"You better watch it if you want this book or not." I tell him as I reach for the book in the shelf under the register.

"That is an evil threat, pretty girl." He laughs as he snatches the book from my grasp quickly when I'm not paying attention. He begins flipping through the pages. "Ooh, another romance."

"Absolutely," I respond as I start on his latte. He notices I'm making it, and quickly stops me.

"Make that two lattes today, actually. Please." He says and I nod as I reach for another mug with a raised eyebrow. "You read a lot of romance for a girl I assume has a boyfriend."

"That is a very wrong assumption," I laugh. "And you make it sound weird, I read a completely normal amount of romance."

"Mhm, sure, okay. So tell me, why is there no boyfriend?"

"Do you know how weird that question is? Like I intend on not dating-"

"Well do you?"

"Do I what?"

"Do you intend on not dating?"

I pour the espresso into each mug of milk, sliding it to him as I reply.

"No, I would like to date. I just-"

"Then sit down and enjoy this cup of coffee with me, will you?"

I feel my face slightly blush as I laugh. "That was slick."

"Well, what do you say?"

"I say let's find a table and I'll tell you about my pet peeve on people interrupting me." I wink.
