School Hallway | Time, 7:55am | Friday

The first day of school is usually absolute Hell for everyone. Getting used to waking up early, and new schedules to memorize. The only upside their seems to be is your friends. They can cheer you up in a matter of seconds. They make your day at least a little decent. At least, thats what I was told.

I'm going to be completely honest, I haven't had a true friend in at least a year. It hasn't been easy, but I was never really the friend-needing type. I am more studies-focused. See, my mother has set expectations for me, ones she couldn't meet herself. She wants the best for me, but says I have to try, otherwise all her work she put into me was for nothing. I don't ever. And I mean ever. want to let her down. Shes like my idol. I owe everything to her. I can't let her down again. Not after last year.

I betrayed her by dating a boy she disapproved of. I don't know if she ever forgave me for it, but  I really hope she did. Anyway...

I check my schedule. First class: Biology with Ms. Ellody. Perfect! I had her last year. As I go put my things in my locker, I hear a familiar voice over my shoulder.

"Hey Princess."

What. The. Hell?

"Duncan, what are you doing over here? I thought I told you to NEVER talk to me again?" I scream. "Chill out. I'm just putting my things in my locker... Its the one to your right." He says. "First off, thats your left. Second, UGHHHH."

He just stood there and chuckled. Asshole. Whats even funny about a girl who clearly hates you making it clear she hates you? I have no idea.

*RINGGG*

"Well, bye Princess." Duncan says as he clicks his tongue, winks at me, and walks away.

"Bye ass-face."

"Sick burn, Babe! Later!"

UGHHH

Biology Class | Time, 8:02am | Friday

Well that was a complete distraction from the major goal of the day. Focusing.

When I entered the classroom, I said hello to Ms. Ellody, and introduced myself to some fellow classmates I didn't know. (You know, just in case I run for class president or something. I should add that to my list!) Anyway, while I was doing that, I saw  another person who made my blood BOIL. Gwendolyn Ingrid, or as she prefers, Gwen. Except I prefer her dead, so shes Gwendolyn to me. She had the GUTS to say hi to me. REALLY? Who does she think she is? Michelle Obama? Shoot. FOCUS COURTNEY.

"Courtney? Is that YOU?" Another familiar voice...

"Yeah? Wait..."

"EMMA?"

"Yeah..?

"EEEEEEEE!!!" We both cheered.

You see, Emma was my BEST friend in middle school. We were so much alike. It was kind of scary. We stopped talking once We got to high school though. She had moved away, and I thought I would never see her again. Guess I was wrong!

I couldn't wait to catch up again! But then I realized I couldn't... "Courtney, make mama proud!" Thats all that kept playing in my head. Her voice. Her dreadful, repeating, anxiety enduing voice.

"Court? You okay..?" Emma asked. I could barely hear her over my mother's voice.

"Huh? Oh...Uh yeah! Can we talk during lunch? I really have to focus on school and stuff...You know my mom." I said, finally snapping out of the trance. "Yeah, I get it...My NǎiNai is just like that." I smiled, knowing I finally found someone who gets it.

Cafeteria | Time, 11:30am | Friday

It was finally lunch. The time where I was meant to relax. Meant to... But I couldn't. The looming dread of my mother's voice kept playing over, and over, and over, and ov-

"COURTNEY! Over here!" Emma yelled. Thank god she did. Breaking the loop was all I needed.

I sat down with my lunch, (if thats what you wanna call it...) and said hello to Emma, and her little sister, Kitty. Emma's friend group was a little bigger than what I thought it would be. And... Very... Interesting. There was Noah, the sarcastic little Indian boy who I'm pretty sure Emma has a crush on, Owen, the fat big goof who eats like he's starving every second of the day, and of course Kitty, who I don't think should even be having lunch right now, I mean she is a Sophomore.

"Sooo..." I said, unsure of how to start a conversation.

"So?" Noah said, in his snarky, strangely robotic monotone voice. "SO! Hows life been Courtney? We really have to catch up, you know?" Emma said, breaking the silence.

"Ha!  Its...Uh- Not bad. I mean I have- had a boyfriend. And I had friend who totally kissed him. Oh yeah, I also have this mother who puts so much pressure on me that I feel like having a breakdown every second of my life! So overall pretty great actually!"

The table was dead silent once again.

"Uh oh. Mommy issues." Noah said rolling his eyes.

"NOAH!" Kitty said, while patting my back. "There, there."

"Uhm... I don't think I should be here- I mean you guys have fun, I'm just gonna go. I have to sign up for clubs and stuff..." I said. I wasn't embarrassed like you may think. I just... Lost it. It happens sometimes. I'm fine though. "Bye!"

I ran out of the lunch room as quickly as possible. I needed to go to the office to see what clubs were available this year.
