THE NEXT DAY,You sat tiredly in your gaming chair, hunched over while resting your chin on your palm as you watched past clips of the Blue Lock tournament from previous years.
Last year, Itoshi Sae had won Blue Lock. Coincidentally, he's also a professional soccer player at the international level. You'd like to think that these things had some correlation, since he rose the ranks exponentially quick and held first place for the majority of the tournament.
Itoshi Sae's face appeared in the top right corner of the screen. He was wearing a headset and his camera was pointed at him from an above-angle, filming him stare intensely at the blue screen before him. The rest of the video displayed his gameplay, which was nothing short of exemplary.
"Damn, how's he not cheating? With those scores? Either he's inhuman or... well, that's the one explanation..." You muttered to yourself, clicking your mouse to skip back a few seconds.
You would have continued watching, but the slight vibrate of your phone distracted you. Curious, you picked it up and clicked onto the home screen... and you laughed out loud when you saw what the notification was.
Barou Shouei had one hell of an ego.
"What a guy..." You chuckled, laying your phone flat on the desk. You assumed that the majority of players this year would also have participated last year. After all, only the top 300 active streamers were considered for selection in the game. Of course, there were exceptions if you showed crazy skill. You remembered clear as day what happened last year between you and Barou. It was a one-on-one between you two, and the stakes were crazy high. It was following the fourth round of selection in the game, which was the equivalent of the quarterfinals.
You and Barou fought it out up until the 90 minute mark. Your skills canceled eachother out in the most annoying and aggravating ways possible, so it was impossible to score against each other.
In the end, you had won. He put up a good fight, but you had beaten him by one point alone. You went through all that only to lose the next match in the semi-finals.
This year it would be different.
