3rd Person
"Siren! I finally found you."
Mizumi freezes in her tracks as a male voice calls her name.
"I know that voice...but it can'tbe him," she says under her breath. She turns around slowly as her brain tries to process what is happening. "Sosuke?"
"Yeah, it's me. Come here, Princess."
When Shinso turns to ask who this stranger is, his girlfriend is gone from beside him. She speeds across the room and pounces onto the man, making him fall back until his back is against the door. Shinso watches in curiosity with a tinge of jealousy as his girl clings to another man.
The stranger hugs Mizumi, planting kisses all over the top of her head. She nuzzles him, whimpering happily. "Sosuke! I missed you so much!" She squeals.
"So who's this?" Shinso can't hide the tone of jealousy in his voice. A few of Mizumi's classmates have gathered around, wondering the same thing.
The man holds the girl with both hands as she turns to face her friends. "Oh, right. I haven't exactly told them about you. Everyone, this is my big brother, Sosuke."
Brother? She's never mentioned having a brother before, so everyone's pretty confused. But it does make sense if you look at the two of them together. They look a lot alike. The same ocean blue eyes and the same dark hair, but Sosuke's hair is short and spiky on top of his head.
Sosuke grins proudly. "It's nice to meet you all. I hope you've been taking very good care of my Princess."
Siren blushes a little as she looks up at her brother. "Please don't embarrass me in front of my friends," she whispers to him.
"I promise, I won't. We have a lot to catch up on anyway."
As interested as her friends are in her brother, they leave the two of alone so they can catch up. The last time she had a family member drop in unexpectedly, it didn't go well, so her reaction to her brother's presence tells them that she'll be safe with him. Even Shinso leaves the room, wanting to give the two of them some privacy."You left me," Siren says to Sosuke sadly after her boyfriend goes home for the day. "You promised you would never leave me alone with her, but you did. Things got worse when you left."
Sosuke hugs his sister. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to leave you, but I had to so I could keep myself safe."
Siren understands why her brother had to leave, but is still hurt. She swallows hard and she braces herself to break the bad news to her brother. "She's gone, Sosuke. Mom committed suicide in a mental hospital a few weeks ago."
He smiles sadly. "I know, Princess. Someone from the Commission told me before they sent me to come see you."
"Did they tell you it was my fault?" Siren's voice is shaky as the tears start to flow.
"What are you talking about?"
"It's all my fault. I could have stopped her if I had realized what that dream meant. It was a prophecy. I saw it happen and I did nothing to stop it from happening. I'm a failure as a daughter and as a hero!"
Sosuke hugs his sister tightly as he comforts her. "Shhh, baby, it's not your fault. There was nothing you could have done. But it's for the best that she's gone now. She can't hurt you anymore, right?"
Siren sniffles and looks up at him. "Yeah, I guess you're right. But it doesn't feel good to admit it..."
They spend the rest of the day catching up on everything they've missed out on in each other's lives over the last 8 years.
Sosuke had spent a couple of years crashing on a friend's couch, working part time at a few different places before he found a good job at a surf shack. He is currently assistant manager at the shack, working alongside his girlfriend. He's really proud of his sister for how far she's come in life, and how much she has grown as a person. He wholeheartedly supports her decision to be a superhero, and he can't wait to see her go pro someday.
They spend the whole night talking, and the two of them are found still clinging to each other. The next day, Siren clings to her brother, not wanting to go to school. He was supposed to go back to the teacher's dorms the night before, but Aizawa decided to leave them alone since he was aware of their situation. He lets them catch up and judging by his student's happy disposition during class, Sosuke didn't tell her something he needed to. Once again, he has to pull her aside after class to tell her something she's not going to want to hear.
Mizumi walks into the dorm building and finds Shinso sitting on the couch, waiting for her. Without a word, she flops over dramatically, burying her face into her boyfriend's lap.
"Rough day?" His amused smile quickly turns to a look of concern as he notices the way her body is shaking, and he realizes she's crying. She only responds with a soft whimper, not able to hide her feelings from him.
"What happened?" He rubs her back soothingly, trying to comfort her.
"I found out the real reason my brother's here. The Commission brought him back to me, just so they can take him away again."
"What do you mean?"
She sits up, wiping her eyes. "They are trying to pay him off so he will cut ties with me. He wanted to see me one last time before he had to abandon me forever. He only came back to say goodbye. How could the Commission do something so cruel?"
Shinso is rendered speechless, unsure of what to say to comfort his girlfriend. He had only met Sosuke for a short moment, but that short interaction told him how much the man loves his little sister. It must have been hard for him to see her again, knowing what was going to happen.
"I haven't seen my brother in 8 years. That's half my life!" Mizumi whines. "Now that I have him back, I can't lose him again. He's my only family...I can't abandon him. How is it necessary for them to take him away from me?"
"I...I don't know...Why don't you go try to talk to him?" Shinso tries to come up with the answers, but he can't find the words.
"He's already gone. He left while I was at school, without saying goodbye. That stupid jerk abandoned me again..."
He hates seeing his girlfriend cry, and how broken she looks. His girl has been through enough, but this is just cruel. "Do you have any other family you can turn to? Maybe they can talk to your brother."
Mizumi sits up and explains the adoption situation with Hawks. Shinso listens quietly as she tells him everything.
"You should talk to Hawks and see what he can do about it," Shinso suggests. So she does. When she goes to her work study that afternoon, she pulls her mentor aside to talk to him about the situation. It didn't take her along to come to the decision, wanting Hawks to officially adopt her, but not if it means losing her brother in the process.
Hawks makes a mental note to talk to the people at the Commission. He doesn't have any siblings himself, but he was separated from his family in order to become a hero, so he understands her situation all too well. It hurt to have to abandon his mother to pursue his dream, and now that he is about to be officially her guardian, Hawks knows it's his responsibility as a hero and as a guardian to give this kid a better life.
"I can't make any promises, but I'll do what I can. Either way, it's gonna be okay, kiddo." Hawks says before sending Mizumi and Tokoyami home for the day.Hawks has a talk with the officials at the Commission, asking why they would do something so cruel to the kid. They tell him that it is within her best interest to not have a distraction in her life, and having her brother around might make her lose focus in her hero work. Hawks brings up the point that having a family would give her something to protect, and would actually motivate her more than anything else. After a heated debate, it is ultimately decided that the Mizumi siblings are allowed to see each other, as long as Siren continues to do well in her work and studies.
