Riptide by Vance Joy

The days passed and today marks the 4 weeks in the apocalypse. Me and Marcus have become closer ever since we blew up the building which was 2 days ago.

Two days ago

My eyes fluttered up and winced at the sunlight leaking through the leaves. It felt like a blanket right out of the dryer. I looked up, completely forgetting that I was with Marcus so seeing a man next to me was quite a scare. I jumped once my eyes laid on him which caught his attention and he looked at me. The air became intense as we stared at each other before he began laughing and smiling. I hated to admit it but I began laughing as well even though I didn't understand what was going on.

"Good morning sunshine," he said to me as he removed his arm from me. The warmth around me was slightly gone, realizing he was what was keeping me warm. "Uh... good morning," I said, embarrassed at the thought of him having to keep me warm and that I didn't wake up to switch jobs with him. "I-uh I'm sorry that I didn't wake up. I guess I was having a good dream or something." I said awkwardly as he laughed, his cheeks rounded as he smiled.

"Don't worry about it. You looked like you needed it." Marcus said as he gave me a playful punch which made me smile. "Thanks," I said as I slowly got up and stretched. "Did anything happen or was everything okay?" I asked him as I popped my back. He looked at me as I popped my back before he responded, "Everything was good. A lurker came by but it was distracted by something before it got close. A gunshot or something I don't know." I could tell my face changed as he said gunshot or something. "So someone was near? Do you think they're alive still?" I asked him as I began to seem desperate to hear that someone else was alive.

"Probably not," he said nonchalantly. His words began to annoy me like why does he seem not to care? Doesn't he want to find more people? What's wrong? "What do you mean, probably not!? Don't you want to find more people? We could find more supplies and get more safety!" I couldn't help but yelling as I watched his face began to tighten. I could tell I was making him mad but he was annoying me. "I mean don't you want to be safer? Or be prep-" "More people means more danger, Alice! It means that someone could turn on us and kill us! Don't you understand that?!" He cut me off as he yelled back. My teeth snapped together as I held myself from yelling back.

His face softened as he pinched the bridge of his nose. He began speaking in an apologetic way, "Look I'm sorry, Alice. I didn't mean it but it's a risk." "Whatever.." I was mad at him and I didn't wanna talk to him. His face became down as he looked at me. I grabbed our stuff and took down the tarp and wrapped it up, shoving it in a bag. I took two of the bags, one with food and water and the other being first aid and other stuff. Marcus grabbed the bag with guns and knives and the other small bags with a few clothes.

Throughout the rest of that day I had ignored him unless I needed to. We had reached the building we planned on blowing up. It was a tan building with many windows and big arch windows. It was rather tall and would be perfect to distract the lurkers.

This was my vision of it

This was my vision of it.

We stood in front of the building before he pulled out the small grenade that he found with his dad's stuff. He pulled the pin and threw it inside and we ran as fast as we could. We managed to get behind a building in the nick of time as the grenade blew up. The building slowly fell to the side as a cloud of dust covered the bottom the building. The building fell on another build and caused a domino effect. Building after building fell as a big cloud of dust formed. It worked as we soon heard the lurkers soon as the came to the sound. I smiled but was cut short as Marcus grabbed my hand and we began running to a store and other spots to get supplies while they were distracted.

"That actually worked!" I said excitedly, completely forgetting that I wasn't speaking to him. "Well duh," he laughed. He looked at me and it felt nice that we were talking even if we running. That's when a lurker came around the corner and tried to bite Marcus. He fell to the ground and I looked at him. My body froze but before I knew it I had stabbed it in the head. It collapsed on Marcus and he pushed it off.

He quickly got up and checked on me. I looked at him, shocked as I began speaking. "Are you okay? Are you bit? Talk to me!" I said repeatedly, panicked. He sighed as he calmed me down. "I'm fine nothing got me. I'm not bit." He said as he grabbed my hand and we began running again to the store.

We got to the store but there was lurkers. The heard us and began coming closer. I looked at Marcus and he looked at me before we began killing them. There was around 7 lurkers and Marcus took on 4 of them. He seemed to be doing okay ish and it was close call here and there. We got rid of them and we began grabbing whatever.

Canned food, chips, water, dry food. Everything. We found a tent and two lighters. After we grabbed most of everything that we could fit in our bags. We left the city and went about 2 miles out.

In the present.

We are around 7 miles away from the city. We set up the tent in a small park and I can hear the crickets. I took the responsibility of watching out. Marcus is sleeping with one of the jackets we found as a blanket. I haven't heard any lurkers and I think this is good spot for now...

YAHHHHH This is my first chapter that goes over 1000 words. Compared to my other chapters at 400, and 500. Thank you for reading this. I don't know what is going to happen in the next chapter. I'm kinda getting ideas from TWD. So if you see a reference in the future yeah it's probably from TWD.
