" Nurse Kay just left. " said the companion of the patient in Room 406. " did you want anything?"
" Oh, did she? It's okay then. " Mindy smiled. As she went out of the room, she noted that she came into the wrong room. The opposite room, 407 buzzer light was flashing instead and she hurriedly crossed the isle and opened the door.
" Oh, sorry," she aoologized. " here, I'm replacing your I VF now!"
" OK, thanks." said the patient. "Afterwards, can you also turn my pillow over? Just to cool my neck and shoulders, It's so hot and uncomfortable not being able to turn to sides..."
" Oh, it's past twelve hours since your surgery, maybe you can be allowed to do so... but let me ask the resident physician first... Meanwhile, I'll pluff your pillow to cool it.." Mindy also patted and gently rubbed the patient's neck and shoulders before replacing the newly shaken and pluffed pillow under the patient's head.
" It's nearly five am now, Mrs. Gomez, just try to sleep some more, I will ask the doctor if you may turn to sides now and I'll come back later to tell you whatever he decides.." Mindy closed the door gently.
Upon returning to the nurses' station, she rechecked the patient's chart for any new or unread doctor's order, but did not find any. Thus she referred the matter to the resident on duty, who readily gave an order to allow turning to sides. Mindy returned to the patient's room with the good news, and helped her patient turn to her preferred side and placed another pillow to support the back. Then she left the patient, who was now smiling and sleepy.
Six am was time to check and record progress of IVF and outputs in the fluid balance sheets, so she did a round of her patients' rooms, noting IVF levels and amount of urine output. She also took their vital signs surreptitiously, so as not to disturb their precious sleep.
She finished her rounds, noting nothing untoward amongst her patients. Then she notified Nurse Kay that she will just have her quick breakfast in their lounge.
Alone in the room, she took out her cell phone. Scrolled the pictures she took of the room 409 patient's wallet. photo, and manipulated points to magnify it. She stared at the picture, hardly recognizing any of the three people in it. It was in sepia so all the colors was in variations of brown only. Apparently the old man who died was the young man in the picture. The young woman with him must be much, much younger than he is, while the little boy looks much like a mini version of him.
Nothing in it bears any clue of why the old man said those words against Keith. Or was there something familiar about that house on the background? SOMETHING?!...
