Sinners are allowed second chances, and redemption can be found in the arms of a genius. Tragically, the universe seems to have other plans.

"An adult human being is the most fearsome, terrifying, and powerful animal on the planet, and parenting is the act of creating an adult human being." Brennan Lee Mulligan

If that is the case, then Ophelia Carrington is fucked. With a string of women who could never stick around and a father who can only stay single long enough to reach for the next glass of scotch, it would be more apt to say she grew up parentless.

Perhaps these ill omens had started early. Perhaps it started when her mother died in childbirth, and became sealed by the name chosen by her father - Ophelia. Lovely. Young. Tragically dead. In what was supposed to be the celebration of life, the very act of naming her Ophelia doomed the girl to an existence surrounded by death and misery.

(What's in a name, Shakespeare had written, to which Ophelia screams fuck you.)

As the years went by, Hugh Carrington had continuously attempted to fill the hole which his wife left. He had that wounded charm, even when he's drunk and barely coherent, the kind that made specific women want to nurture and fix. These constant attempts at finding love had been justified by claiming it is for Ophelia's sake - to make sure his daughter grows up with a mother.

On paper, it could be a noble pursuit. In reality, her father's superficial charm wore off after a few months, and the women ran off.

daffodils bloom after winter, signifying spring and all of its promises;
hope, rebirth, new beginnings.

It was Trish who told her this. Trish, who taught her the language of flowers and filled her head silly with fairytales. Ophelia clung to the older woman like a vine, clamoring and doing her very, very damn best to make sure this one doesn't leave. Trish, who had tempered the rage Ophelia had started to cultivate against her father, her dead mother, the world. Trish who, from the time she was nine until she was seventeen, taught her hard work and justice and kindness.

Trish, who went missing before Ophelia turned 18, and took all the whimsy and light with her.

narcissus poisoning :

: all parts of the daffodil contain the toxic chemical lycorine.

: ingestion may induce nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in large enough amounts, even death.

Ophelia Carrington is no stranger to death. Whether by her hand or otherwise. The first time she took a life, it had been an accident. (At least, that's what it says on the police report). The man - much, much older than her 20 years-in hindsight, she had no business messing around with him-had been drinking. He'd been hitting on her the whole night, had playfully told her he's deathly allergic to nuts.
