The Love Base Formula

Prologue

“Emotional stimulus is routed directly to the hypothalamus which then produces bodily reactions like fear and other emotions, that's according to William James”

“Theory?”

“James-Lange Theory”

“The one Walter Canon criticized”

I instantly shook my head disagreeing to what she just stated. James-Lange Theory wasn't criticized, saan ba niya narinig 'yon?

“Canon proposed an alternative theory of his own. He didn't criticize the James-Lange Theory”, mariin kong pagsasalita habang nakapokus ang tingin sa ceiling ng kanyang kwarto. I really enjoy lying here in her bed, napakalambot kase. “In his theory, it was said that conscious emotional experiences and physiological reaction and behavior are relatively independent events”

“We cry because we feel angry, strike because we are afraid, and tremble because we're sorry”, may kumpyansa niyang usal. Agad naman akong napanguso dahil sa narinig.

Muntik na siyang tumama.

“We cry because we feel sorry, strike because we're angry, and tremble because we're afraid”, pagtama ko. “That is also according to William James”

She grunts.

“Siya ba yung nagsabi na positive feeling is followed by a contrasting negative feeling and vice versa?”, pasunod pa nito dahilan para hindi ako agad makasagot.

Are we still talking about Theories of Emotions here? Last time I checked, there are only three theories under emotions. We have James-Lange Theory that was proposed by William James, of course, we also have the Canon-Bard Theory ni Walter Canon, and the Cognitive Theory. Walang nabanggit na Richard Solomon.

Or so—wala nga ba?

“What's his theory ba?”, kasabay ng pagtatanong ko na 'yon ang pagbalingkwas ko ng higa para harapin siya.

She look so serious and focus.

“Uh—Solomon's Opponent Process Theory”, she instantly answered. “It says that any feelings, either positive or negative, that is experienced in succession loses some of its intensity”

Bingo.

I was right all along. Wala na siya sa Theories of Emotions. “You're already talking about the Theories of Motivation, Vien”, marahan kong sumbat. “Let me guess.

“At Arousal Theory”, dagdag niya. Ako naman ngayon ang napailing. Mali-mali at magulo ang notes niya.

“Under Theories of Motivation yan”, sigurado kong sumbat.

She's still wearing her brown off-shoulder top and wide leg pants.
