"I thought we agreed that you'll be telling me everything. What is it that you are hiding from me, Ace?" Heart's voice was undeniably laced with anger as she confronted her best friend once again when they were the only ones left in the living room.
"You think I didn't notice the knowing looks Riley had been sending you? What is it?"
Ace sighed as she pressed a finger on her temples.
"Heart..."
"Here we go again! All those talks for what? Fucking useless!"
They were both taken aback when Heart suddenly snapped and shouted. They stood there in awkward silence just looking at each other.
"I'm getting there, I will be telling you everything but not now. I am trying to sort things out here, okay? Trying to put two and two together, trying to understand things first because how can I even tell you when I can't even form a coherent thought in my mind? Why won't you trust me? Yeah, I promised you no secrets. But with the loads of information I had and with all the new revelations we got from Riley, my mind is now on a mess already than it is. I will tell you everything. Just. Wait. Cut me some slack." Ace was obviously struggling to hold back her anger, taking heavy deep breathes in between words.
"Excuse me." Before Heart could say a word and apologize, Ace turned her back on her and left.
Heart broke down crying. She never had a fight with Ace her entire life. This was the first time she shouted at her bestfriend and Ace getting angry at her. She felt her heart breaking when she heard her best friend slamming her bedroom door.
"What have I done?" she started hitting herself over and over with anger, guilt consuming her like wild fire.
"Heart! What happened? Hey, come here." Diamond rushed over to stop her and just hugged her friend tightly, letting her cry.
Spade came running over to them after trying to check on Ace but failing to get a word with the latter. After an hour, Heart exhausted herself from crying and is now asleep. She was so upset with herself and Ace had locked herself in her own room. She won't come out no matter how her friends had been begging her to talk to them.
"Look, I know you're upset but Heart wanted to apologize. She hated herself for making you angry and you know she didn't mean it. She's sorry, Ace. Please, come out when you feel okay already. She's waiting for you."
Spade and Diamond were also upset having to witness the first serious fight their two bestfriends ever had and they don't know how to react. The atmosphere was so awkward and heavy. They were worried sick for both of them especially when Heart seems not to be waking up from her sleep anytime soon and Ace had been in her room for hours, the longest she was left alone. They were afraid something could've happened to them already and they were starting to panic.Riley arrived just before they lose their minds. He went back to his hotel room after the talk to retrieve his things. They decided that he should occupy their guest room instead as they try to figure things out.
"What happened?"
They told him about the fight. He went straight to Ace's door and banged on it while Spade and Diamond tried to wake their other friend.
The moment that Ace opened her door, Heart also woke up from her deep slumber."What are you pounding my door for?" Ace asked in a groggy voice when she opened her door and saw Riley standing outside.
"Uhhh..." he hesitates but before he could say more, Heart came running to them. "Ace!"
"What?" concern laced Ace's voice upon seeing her bestfriend. "What is it? What happened?"
"I can't lose you!" She clings to her like her life depended on it and began crying in hysterics.
"I'm here, okay? What happened? Tell me about it, hmmm?" She gently removed Heart's clutches on her and led her to her room, gesturing for the others to follow.
"What happened?" she asked Spade and Dia.
"We were trying to wake her up because it was so unlikely that she'd be sleeping the whole morning. Then she woke up and started crying for you." They exchanged glances.
"Okay, tell me. What was your dream?"
"Oh Ace, you died over and over in my arms!" was all Heart could say before crying again until she was tired, still clinging to Ace as if the latter will be taken away from her.
"What do you mean she slept this whole morning? What time is it?" She turned to her wall clock and exclaimed in disbelief, "It's 1 pm already?!"
"Yeah..."
"Why didn't you wake me up?" She turned to Spade and Dia.
"Well, we tried but you locked yourself in here." Diamond explained.
"I locked myself in here?" Ace looked at her incredulously.
"Yeah, after you got into a fight with Heart."
"A fight? What are you talking about?" Ace asked in disbelief, thinking she just heard it wrong.
The three exchanged glances, confusion written all over their faces.
"I never got into a fight with Heart," Ace was adamant. "Right, dear?" turning to her snotty friend beside her, letting out a little scoff.
Heart nodded her head, looking at the others like they just said the most stupid thing ever. "We would never. That'd be the last thing we'll ever do," she added between hiccups.
Spade tried to tell them what happened that morning but Riley stopped her, asking Heart about her dream instead.
"Me and Ace are out for a night drive, just like we used to do before. We were laughing on some silly jokes when a person in white suddenly passed in front of us, making her lost control of the wheel and the car flipped. I don't know how Ace managed to throw me out of the window but she was stuck inside. Before I could run to her, the car blew up."
She was breathing heavily.
"And then another one. I was with her again, this time Spade and Diamond were there as well. We are walking in a crowded street, when Ace was suddenly whisked away from us like a strong wind had sucked her from behind. We turned around and saw her on the ground, lying in a pool of blood, her head was a mess. She died in my arms."
The group huddled to embrace her in a way they knew would calm her as Ace tried comforting her.
"Shhh, Heart. It's just a nightmare, okay?"
"It seemed so real. You fucking died, Ace! I can't lose you, please."
"You won't, I promise."
It took another hour before Heart finally calmed down. Ace had to promise her over and over again that she wouldn't die.
"You good?"
"Yeah, sorry. And thank you." She smiled at Dia and Spade. She then turned sheepishly to Riley, "I'm really embarrassed you had to see me like that."
"No worries, I don't judge, I was worse when I learned of Nate's disappearance. I completely understand." He offered her a smile before hugging her. "It's going to be okay." He assured her.
"I hope so, I will do everything to stop my dream from happening. No one and nothing can ever take Ace away from us, not even the gods in the heavens above or Death itself."
Riley felt a chill run down his spine when he heard the strong determination in Heart's voice. I would've done the same."Neither Ace nor Heart remembered what happened this morning, how is that even possible?" Diamond asked Riley and Spade after they had finished eating.
"Somebody seems to be intervening," Riley picked his words carefully, as they all look over the other two who are now enjoying their tea in the balcony. "Somebody who doesn't like seeing them fight. Someone who doesn't want this friendship to be ruined." He turned to look at them as Dia and Spade exchanged a knowing look.
"What?"
"Clubs," Spade whispered, almost inaudible.
"Clubs?" He repeated, almost in doubt.
"Yes. I believe she's here with us." Diamond stood up and walked towards the spare room, Spade and Riley following behind.
She wasn't surprised to find it's door locked even when she was sure they left it open. Spade went upstairs to her room to get the key while Diamond started telling Riley everything about the hauntings.
"And now, I think I finally came up into something," they both turned to see Ace walking towards them, Heart tagging along.
"Are you thinking the same thing?" Ace asked Riley as Spade also came running down, the keys jingling in her hands.
"Yes," he nodded slowly.
Ace took the key from Spade, smiling and thanking the latter as she opened the room.
"Then we need to have a talk again, this time though, we have to start talking about something that had been burdening me for the last seven years, even when it means we have to hurt all over again," she looked at each of her friends before pushing the door wider and stepping inside.
