"100 shifts." captain anderson says as she and sergeant gray stand in front of me, Nolan, Jackson and Lucy. "Listen, not a lot of rookies make it to this point in their probationary year." grey says.

"It's a reason to celebrate." anderson says. "But not too much." grey says. "For your first 100 shifts, your training officers have been there to guide the way. Not today." anderson says.

plain clothes day. i remember when lance started as a police officer and had his for first plain clothes day, he said it was hell on earth.

"Plain Clothes Day." i say aloud.

"That's right, Officer salvatore. Very good."

"I'm sorry, what is Plain Clothes Day?" Lucy asks.

"Your T.O.s will be out of uniform, riding with you in a strictly observational capacity." grey clarifies. "They will not advise, assist, or help you in any way. Every decision will be yours to make."

"Does this mean I finally get to choose where we eat for lunch?" Nolan asks.

"Yes, Officer Nolan. For all intents and purposes, today you are alone. And that should scare the hell out of you." grey says.

"This will be a true measure of where you are in the learning process. And your performance today could have a profound impact on your career path in this department." anderson says.

"So, any questions?"

"Uh, yes, sir. What happens if we get into real trouble?" Lucy asks.

"Deal with it. And if you can't, your T.O. will step in."

"But make no mistake - If that happens, you will be judged. That's it. Good luck out there." anderson warns.

"Are you guys as excited about this as I am? We finally get to call the shots." Nolan asks as all four of us walk down the stairway.

"I know, right." Lucy says.

"Whoa, slow down. You two realize that 20% of probationary officers that wash out of the program do it during Plain Clothes Day." Jackson says. "he's right. my older brother told me on his first plain clothes day four officers quit before they even left the building." i say.

"Don't tell us that! Why would you tell us that?" nolan asks.

"Motivation." Jackson says. "actually i'm just trying to scare Nolan. he's to happy and it's to early for it." i say as we reach the bottom of the stairs.

"They grow up so fast, don't they?" Lopez says and her, Bishop and Tim are all standing together. "Please, they're just as green as they were yesterday." bishop says. "What are you looking at, Boot? I'm not even here." Tim says making me roll my eyes.

"Let's go get our gear." Jackson says and we all start walking away, the three musketeers following.

"My wash out number's three. What about you?" i hear lopez say. "Same. I bet Tim's is up in double digits by now." "Damn straight. I've had 11 rookies bounced from the program during Plain Clothes Day. Looking to make it an even dozen today." i hear Tim say.

sometimes i wish i could slap him.

"Do not listen. They're just trying to psych us out." Nolan says as we start getting gear. He picks up two duffel bags from the counter, as usual.

"Already making a mistake." Bishop says. "If we're not here, why get two kit bags?" Lopez asks as she stands in front of Nolan. "We're supposed to have two bags, just in case they have to take action." i say to Nolan.
