Kazan Yamaoka
1277 Japan
Kazan trotted through the halls of his family estate. The Yamaoka estate. He knew its history very well. He was proud that this was his home and remembers the story his father would tell him as a kid. The estate was bought by the first of the Yamaoka, a shipwreck survivor, who came from a distant ashy island. He washed ashore just as political tensions sparked the flames of war. Yamaoka joined the battlefield and unleashed hell on his foes. No one could match the raw fury of his Katana, which elevated him to a legend. They say his devilish mask haunted the dreams of all men. His fame grew as he spilled blood on both sides of the conflict. With power came wealth, which he used to buy the estate and begin his legacy. The land was passed down from one generation to the next, each one leaving its mark on the landscape. This was Kazan's favourite story. It made him the person he is today. Kazan was proud to carry the Yamaoka name and so he wanted to take it further. Honouring it wasn't enough. He wanted to surpass his father and make him more proud. The only way he could do this was to end the thinning of the samurai culture with farmers posing as samurai. And so he was on his way to see his father. When he arrived at his father's room he knocked on the wooden door frame and announced it's him. To which his father replied that he could enter. When Kazan entered his father's study he saw that his father was writing and just hoped he wasn't disturbing him too much. Kazan waited patiently until his father was done finishing his sentence and looked up at him.
"Kazan, my son. To what do I owe this visit?" his father said.
Kazan was clothed in his fiercest samurai suit, a katana by his side. Kazan was big and strong and his armor only amplified this. Kazan noticed his father staring at him, at why he is wearing his armor.
"Father, I wish to rid our country of imposters. They contaminate the samurai culture. They shouldn't be allowed to live and give us, the real samurai, a bad name".
Kazan was bowing as deeply as he could when he proposed this. But his words were not followed by more words, but by silence. When Kazan looked up he saw his father had continued to write which meant they wouldn't be having this conversation. His father could be a difficult man and Kazan knew this better than no one. There was only one problem with his father's way of handling things and that was that Kazan had enough. He wanted this more than anything and so he decided to not leave and insist.
"Father, this is what I want. Can you please listen and consider?" Kazan said.
This time there was no silence, but laughter.
"My son, you will never succeed. I think you should consider more noble pursuits. Look at your sister. She is going to marry a fine man. She is going to continue our family bloodline and do her duty to her family. You should stay here. Protect the people as the fine and skilled samurai you are. Marry a beautiful woman and continue our bloodline".
"But father, I want more than that. I want to be known in history like the first Yamaoka".
"You are not among the ranks. You will do as you're told and that's the end of this conversation".
His father dismissed him like it was nothing. He didn't even want to listen. Kazan had no choice but to bow and leave the room. As soon as he was out of the room rage seemed to take over. Kazan got so angry. Doesn't his father see that he wants to do more for his country? They can't allow farmers to get away with carrying the samurai name. The samurai are the protectors. They had to work hard to become the respected men they are today and he wasn't going to let anyone disgrace them, his family, him. Those imposters were going to pay for their actions one way or another. A voice in his head agreed. Kazan tried to calm himself as he left to get himself some sake and drink until he could no more.
