Suddenly, I hear a rustle in the bushes, snapping me out of my blissful daze. The monkey hears it too and its fragile body freezes. Half of its head is still in the water, not willing to move a muscle. Its big ears shoot up as it stays extremely still. I am doing the same thing, frozen in the flowing water, slowly turning my head around, looking for the source of the noise. As nothing but the water moves, my heart begins to race and my breathing increases dramatically.
As I anxiously wait for what seems like forever, the monkey has had enough. It bolts into the water and jumps onto my shoulder, sending drops of water everywhere. It then stays on my shoulder for a split second, before leaping onto a branch above me and scampering into the trees.
If I wasn't scared before, I'm terrified now. On my left, the bushes seem to move restlessly. Two shining green eyes dart amongst the leaves in disguise, then stop. Like a target, they're locked on me. My brain only comes up with one option - run. But my body disobeys, scared stiff. The minutes pass by torturously as everything stays still and silent - even the waterfall sounds kilometres away. My heart vibrates nervously in my chest, waiting for something, anything, to happen.
Suddenly, the green eyes burst out of the bushes, revealing themselves. The beast comes at me in slow motion - a menacing leopard, hurtling towards me. In the light, his eyes shine like emeralds and his teeth, pearly sharp daggers, all aimed at me. He then snarls, revealing multiple rows of teeth, cut, clean and ready to kill. As the leopard leaps through midair, time speeds up. This is when I run.
I make my way out of the lake, stumbling into the jungle again. Behind me, I hear an almighty splash as the leopard lands in the water. He roars in frustration, the sound echoing through the jungle. This makes me run even faster. I struggle as I trample over sticks and vines, the leopard chasing me down. I can already feel my legs getting sore, but adrenalin pushes my body to the limit.
As I round a corner, I slip and fall head first onto the mossy ground below. I can hear the leopard's heavy footsteps, shaking the jungle floor like a tremor of an earthquake...thud thud, thud thud...I brace for the impact.
The leopard comes up from behind and turns me over, slamming me to the ground, which knocks all the air out of my chest. His claws pin my shoulders, and I can't move. I can only turn my head sideways, to keep the leopard from chomping through to my skull. He's now snapping at my head, with drops of saliva flying everywhere. I can even smell his meaty breath - I can also sense death. I can even taste it, the air lingering with bad news to come.
