"Last night, a dead body was found near the banks of the Chao Phraya river. The body belonged to a 22 year old man, who was last seen at a party just 3 hours before. Investigators think it was suicide due a letter he had kept in hi-" Then, the TV turned off and with this, also the only light source from inside the apartment.
Only the moon and the stars from the night sky revealed a dark figure in the window, slowly putting down the remote on the couch. A hot-breathed sigh came out of the figure's lips before it turned to the window.
A pair of eyes stared at the outside world. Cars, electric billboards and streetlights reflected in the black eyes in a colorful way, making them sparkle.
Suddenly, a phone vibrated. Ray's head shot back to look who was calling him at such an ungodly hour. The confusion was basically written on his face, but he also didn't expect more than a scam call.
But deep inside, he hoped it was a call from him. Every call. And every message Ray ever got. He hoped it was from him. Writing the two simple words "I'm ready". But it was never the case. This hasn't been the case for one year and three months. And still. Giving up is the last thing Ray will do. He promised himself that. He promised him that.
With slow steps, the young man reached the phone which was hanging on the charger. He stared at the number on the display. "+662 310 3000" It showed. Ray knew this number from somewhere. But it wasn't saved in his contacts.
Then, it snapped. It was the number of the Bangkok hospital. He quickly ripped the phone away from the charger before picking up the call. "Hello?" He asked, feeling the adrenaline rushing through his veins.
A woman's voice began to talk. Her tone was very calm, not like Ray's. "Hello. May I speak with Ray Pakorn?"
"This is Ray speaking." He said, biting his upper lip slightly as he thought of all the possible things why the hospital might call him. Maybe something happened with his father? No. That would be impossible. His father is literally sleeping in his room right now...
There was a small silence before the voice on the other end began to speak again. "Good evening, Sir. This is Pakpao from Bangkok Hospital. I am calling to inform you that your boyfriend was brought in with a concussion."
This last sentence brought pure confusion to the man. "Boyfriend? I don't have a boyfriend." He said, making a weird face. "Are you sure you are calling the right person right now?"
"Well, the patient gave the nurses your number and told that you were his boyfriend. And he also knows your name, so-" That second, Pakpao got cut off by Ray. Ray himself knew it was un-polite, but right now he was too confused to focus on this right now.
"Would you be so nice and tell me the name of the patient?" He asked. Pakpao answered with a simple "Sure" before taking a second.
"His name is Sand Panichwit. Do you know who that is." She asked, now also sounding a bit confused. But what Pakpao didn't know was that she almost gave Ray on the other line a heart attack with that name.
"Sand Panichwit!?"
Ray stared straight ahead, almost letting his phone fall. Sand Panichwit - AKA the love of his life. "Ma'am, are you sure he said boyfriend and not ex-boyfriend? Sand and I haven't been together for over a year." He mumbled into the speaker, trying to stay calm.
Pakpao still seemed to have a calm voice as she spoke again. "Maybe he is suffering under a loss of memories. I will inform the doctors to check on that."
"How is he doing right now though?"
"He's currently stable, but we need to keep him under observation due to the concussion. He was quite insistent that you be informed."
"Alright. I get that. Is it possible to talk to him right now or visit him?"
"At the moment, he's resting, and we're monitoring his condition closely. It might be a while before he's able to have visitors or phone calls." She answered.
"That's okay. Can you then please keep me informed when something changes? That'd be great." "Of course. I will make sure to write you some mails in case anything happens. Don't worry."
Ray let out a relieved sigh, not getting over the fact that Sand is in the hospital, probably thinking they were still together. He said goodbye before ending the call, putting the phone down slowly.
Moments of silence went in of Ray just standing in this room, thinking while staring into nowhere.
Slowly, he let himself fall onto the couch next to him. If Sand cannot remember the whole breakup, he lost all memories he had for the last year. Or at least a good bit about it. This could mean he also forgot about the whole incident...
Ray surely didn't know if Sand forgetting about what happened on the night of the 3rd of September was a good thing or the worst thing ever happening. On one hand, it was like a second chance for Ray. To not make the same mistakes as he did one year ago.
And his biggest mistake, letting Sand go at the worst time of his life. But on the other hand, Ray couldn't bear to see Sand go through this pain again. The first time almost broke his heart. Just remembering these days made him want to break down.
But what if Sand only forgets his memories for like a few days? Then Ray would make him useless hopes right now. Maybe Sand will remember the day and start hating Ray for not being there. For letting him go and down.
This all was just too much for Ray. He let himself sink into the fabric of the couch before looking to the side. There he saw the bottle of whisky standing. Ever since Ray's and Sand's breakup, Ray started to drink again.
Only a few times tho. Cause half of the time Ray held the glass in his hand, ready to pour it into a glass, he remembered Sand. Sand wouldn't want Ray to fall back again into his addiction. And like this he would put the bottle back down again.
Ray slowly closed his eyes and helped himself from going over to the shelf. Alcohol was not the solution now. The best thing he can do now is wait. Wait and think of all the different things he might do in whatever situation will turn out to actually happen.
To think on how to best support Sand if he would find out again that his mother, the only family member Sand had left since he was an only child and his dad left, and so dearly cared for was dead.
