The camp settled into an uneasy quiet as night fell. Exhausted from the day's work, I lay down on my makeshift bed, hoping for a few hours of respite from the chaos that had consumed our world. Sleep came quickly, but it brought with it a nightmare more terrifying than anything I had faced before.
-----
The world around me blurred and shifted, and suddenly I found myself standing in a dark, unfamiliar forest. The air was thick with fog, and the trees loomed ominously, casting eerie shadows that seemed to twist and writhe with a life of their own. An oppressive silence hung in the air, broken only by the distant rustle of leaves and my own ragged breathing.
"Marco!" I called out, my voice echoing through the darkness. "Ruby! Lila!"
There was no response except for the unsettling whisper of wind through the trees. Panic gripped my chest as I stumbled forward, each step feeling like a struggle against an unseen force pulling me deeper into the darkness.
A movement caught my eye—a flicker of shadow at the edge of my vision. I whirled around, heart pounding, but saw nothing. The sense of unease grew stronger as I pressed on, calling out again and again, desperate to find my friends.
"Max, over here!" Marco's voice suddenly rang out, filled with urgency.
Relief flooded through me as I ran towards the sound. I found Marco standing in a small clearing, his face etched with worry and fear. "Marco, what's happening? Where are the others?"
Before Marco could answer, the shadows around us coalesced into a dark, humanoid figure. The creature stood tall and menacing, its eyes glowing a malevolent red. It emanated an aura of dread that sent shivers down my spine.
"Get ready, Max!" Marco shouted, brandishing a metal pipe that gleamed dully in the dim light.
The creature lunged at us with startling speed. Marco swung his pipe, connecting with the creature's arm, but it was as if his weapon passed right through it. The creature retaliated with a swift counterattack, knocking Marco to the ground with a vicious swipe.
"No!" I yelled, rushing forward to help.
Before I could reach Marco, the creature turned towards him again, its shadowy form twisting and contorting. I froze as I watched in horror, pinned to the ground by some unseen force, unable to move or intervene.
The creature's claws elongated into razor-sharp points, and with each strike, Marco cried out in agony. Blood stained the forest floor as the creature mercilessly stabbed him again and again. Marco's desperate screams echoed through the trees, each one tearing at my soul.
"Marco, I'm sorry!" I shouted, tears streaming down my face.
But my voice went unheard in the nightmarish scene unfolding before me. I struggled against the invisible bonds that held me, fighting to break free and save my friend, but it was futile. All I could do was watch helplessly as Marco's life was mercilessly taken by the creature's relentless assault.
---------------
I jolted awake with a gasp, my heart racing and my body drenched in sweat. The nightmare's grip slowly loosened as I realized I was back in the quiet camp, surrounded by the soft glow of moonlight. Nearby, Ruby stirred from her own restless sleep, concern etching her features as she noticed my distress.
"Max, are you okay?" Ruby's voice was gentle, filled with empathy.
I sat up, wiping a shaky hand across my face. "Yeah, just a nightmare," I managed to say, my voice trembling with lingering fear.
Ruby moved closer, her hand reaching out to touch my arm comfortingly. "You looked terrified. Do you want to talk about it?"
I shook my head, unable to find the words to describe the horrors that had haunted my dreams. "It was... just a bad dream."
She nodded understandingly, her gaze softening with concern. "Nightmares can be rough. But you're safe now. We're all here."
Her kindness warmed me, easing the lingering chill of the nightmare. As she sat beside me, a sudden impulse seized me—a longing to feel grounded, to connect with the present moment amid the lingering echoes of fear.
I turned to Ruby, my heart racing for a different reason now. Without thinking, I leaned forward and kissed her softly on the lips. The world seemed to pause, time slowing as our lips met in a brief, tender embrace.
When we parted, I jolted awake again still in the darkness of the camp. "Aw, damn it..." I wished that it wasn't a dream but looked over to a sleeping Ruby. I closed my eyes and went back to sleep.
