The next morning dawned with a crisp chill in the air, signaling the arrival of autumn. Nabi stood at the bus stop, her breath forming tiny clouds in the early morning light.
Yesterday's events at Harmony High School still lingered in her mind, particularly her encounters with Heeseung. She couldn't shake off the memory of his cold demeanor, and yet, a part of her was curious about what lay beneath his distant facade.
As the bus arrived and she boarded, Nabi found herself scanning the seats for a familiar face. Mina had mentioned a few friendly classmates yesterday, but her thoughts kept returning to Heeseung and the uneasy tension between them.
When she entered the literature classroom, Nabi noticed Heeseung was already seated at his desk, his gaze fixed on the textbook open in front of him. She hesitated for a moment before taking her seat next to him. He didn't acknowledge her presence, a fact that both relieved and frustrated her.
Ms. Kim entered the room, greeting the class with her usual warmth before diving into the day's lesson. As she discussed the symbolism in the novel they were studying, Nabi found herself engrossed in the discussion, her mind racing to keep up with the new concepts.
Throughout the lesson, she stole glances at Heeseung, trying to decipher his thoughts. He remained stoic, occasionally jotting down notes with a detached air. It was as if he existed in a world separate from everyone else, a world guarded by walls Nabi couldn't penetrate.
During a break between classes, Nabi found herself standing alone by the window, lost in thought. She didn't notice Heeseung approaching until he was standing beside her, his presence imposing yet strangely distant.
"Are you following me or something?" His voice was cool, devoid of any trace of warmth.
Nabi turned to face him, caught off guard by his directness. "No, I was just... thinking," she answered, unsure of how to respond.
Heeseung raised an eyebrow, studying her with an intensity that made her uncomfortable. "Thinking about what?"
Nabi hesitated, her gaze drifting to the courtyard below where students were milling about between classes. "About school. It's... different from what I'm used to."
Heeseung glanced out the window briefly before turning his attention back to her. "Different how?"
"Well, back in my old school, things were quieter, more familiar," Nabi explained, searching for the right words. "Here, everything feels so big and fast-paced. It's like everyone has their own agenda."
Heeseung nodded, his expression unreadable. "That's Harmony for you. It's not for everyone."
Nabi sensed an opening in the conversation and decided to press further, curious despite herself. "What about you? What's your story, Heeseung?"
Heeseung's lips quirked into a faint smirk, though his eyes remained guarded. "Why do you want to know?"
"I guess I'm just curious," Nabi replied honestly.
