chapter twenty-two
" Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter
and sing for the tear
Sing with me,
if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good
Lord will take you away."

FROM HOW THE OTHERS react when Rory returns home, she may as well have been gone for several months, not two days. She has barely closed the taxi door and started up the driveway when the boys and Karen burst from the house. They appear so quickly, a flurry of screams and cheers and limbs stretching out to grab her, that she wonders if they'd been waiting with their faces pressed to the windows to see when she'd come back.

"Rory!" Graham exclaims, reaching her first and yanking her off of her feet. He sways her from side to side while holding her in a bone-crushing hug. "We missed you so much!"

"I'm going through mango withdrawal," Eddie adds, pressing a brotherly kiss to her temple, barely having to lean down from how high she is off the ground.

Rory frowns. "I thought there were mangoes in the fridge."

"There are. It's just not the same when I cut them myself."

"Aren't you proud of us?" Warren asks, pulling her in for a hug once Graham finally sets her down. "We didn't burn the place down! Or flood it!"

"It was mostly thanks to me," Karen says. She takes Rory's suitcase so it's not banging around while the boys manhandle her like a rag doll. "Please never, ever leave again."

"It was two days!" Rory shoots them all an incredulous look. "How bad could it have been?"

Graham's face becomes somber. "You don't wanna know."

"Ooo — kaaayyy..." she trails off, eyeing them suspiciously. "Well, as long as the house is still standing, I'm going to take a nap. That flight was vicious."
