Chapter - 1

-Alexandria's POV-

Letting out a long tired yawn, I rubbed my eyes free of sleep and leaned forward, setting my elbow on the table in front of me and placing my chin on my palm. I sleepily stared at our English teacher, not really bothering to understand what he’s explaining to us. All I know that our current topic is Poetry and that we are learning about some poem by some dead guy called William… something. I don’t know; I don’t care.

“Can anyone tell me what does this line means: ‘Never did sun more beautifully steep – in his first splendour valley, rock, or hill;’

Everybody went silent. They all stared at the teacher, not knowing what to say. I know what that means, but just don’t feel like opening my mouth. I wonder if anyone here knows the meaning, or if they’re just not bothering to speak up like me.

When no one answered, Mr Howard speaks up, “Okay. Tell me what Steep is?”

“It’s a word.” Ella says. She is one of my best friends.

In every class she’s in, she’s known for one who asks so many questions that even teacher’s get annoyed—especially in English class, which she does to just annoy Mr. Howard.

“Yes, it is a word.” Mr Howard replies, “But what is it described as in the speech?”

“Introduction.”

In the speech, Ella, in the speech.” Mr Howard emphasizes.

“Oh! Oh!” Ella exclaims, “As the conclusion.”

I and another one of my best friend, Jayde begin to snicker at Ella’s attempts of guessing the right answer. “Why don’t you just be quiet if you don’t know the answer?” Jayde laughs. She is—you can say—the sarcastic one in our group. When it comes to Jayde and I, sitting together, we always end up cracking jokes and laughing our asses off. It’s almost as if our minds are the same, which results in us understanding each other’s complicated jokes that no one seems to understand. People—even our friends—think we’ve gone mental. Sometimes we actually wonder why the hell we aren’t comedians.

My chocolate brown eyes darted towards her, “She’s saying whatever is coming to her head in attempts of guessing the right answer.” I say, chuckling. Jayde laughs along with me, her hazel green eyes closing for a second as she laugh loudly—the whole class was in chaos, so us laughing loudly isn’t heard by the teacher.

“Quiet everybody!” Our teacher’s loud voice booms around the classroom, and suddenly everyone fall silent. We all know we’d be in serious trouble if we don’t listen to Mr. Howard. Since, he’s already pretty old; every student in this school is waiting for the day to come when he will be retiring from his job. Though, I don’t think he will be retiring any time soon; probably not until we’re out of High School.

“Now, who can tell me what ‘steep’ means?”

“Sharply falling, or rising.” Ella answers again,“Or something, high."
