Autumn Germaine had been best friends with Mike since they were kids. She always admired his kindness and sweet nature, and slowly but surely, she realized that she had developed feelings for him. She decided to tell him one day at school and nervously approached him during lunch.
"Hey, Mike. Can we talk?" Autumn asked.
"Sure, what's up?" Mike replied.
"I just wanted to say that I have feelings for you. I really like you," Autumn confessed.
Mike's face turned serious as he replied, "Autumn, I'm sorry, but I don't feel the same way. I hope we can still be friends though."
Autumn felt her heart sink as she nodded, "Yeah, of course. I just need some space for a bit."
She went to the bathroom, where her two friends Amber and Caroline were waiting for her. They took one look at her and knew something was wrong. They brought her to the sink and helped her clean up her makeup.
"You still look pretty, don't worry," Amber said, trying to boost Autumn's confidence.
Autumn smiled weakly and reapplied her mascara before heading back to class. Mike tried to Snapchat her during the car ride home, but she ignored him. She just needed some time to process her emotions.
After school, Autumn went home to grab her skates and met up with her hockey team. They skated around the neighborhood, playing street hockey on her basketball court. Everyone was having a blast, and Autumn was glad for the distraction.
As the day turned into evening, they all headed inside to watch movies. Autumn was cuddled up on the couch with Guy, her twin brother, and the hockey team when there was a knock on the door. Autumn got up to answer it, expecting to see her mom, but instead, it was Mike.
He wrapped his arms around her, surprising her with a kiss. Autumn kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. He asked her to be his girlfriend, and she said yes. The hockey team cheered for them as they kissed again, Mike dipping Autumn as they did so.
Mike sat down on the couch, and Autumn cuddled into him. The team stayed over, and Mike slept on the couch with Autumn, holding her close all night long.
Autumn knew that there would be challenges ahead, but she was happy to have Mike by her side. She fell asleep with a smile on her face, grateful for the unexpected surprises that life could bring.
