Snow trickled away across the window, melting as the sun sat high and a cloud was nowhere to be seen. The air was still cold; freezing once the wind hit your face.
One of Beacon's librarians had cracked open the window only a few inches; enough for Y/N to smell the noon air.
Blake pulled away, allowing her hands to roam over and behind his ears in an uncharacteristic gesture of affection.
"You belittle me?" Y/N asked, genuine in his question.
"I changed my mind." She sighed. "For now, at least."
"A moment I'll treasure." He hummed.
Her thumbs made tiny, thoughtless movements. She fidgeted with anxiety arcing across her chest in a blink. For a moment, Y/N's eyes changed from content to curious.
"Get up." She whispered. "People are staring..."
He did as he was told, towering over her and scaring a few student back into their books when he checked.
"Are you hungry?" He asked, taking her hand when it retreated.
"Yeah." She nodded with a deep breath. He felt it flash in her emotions. She hadn't eaten since he left, now she was at ease and elated. He was indifferent. Blake noticed very few things about him, but confidence was the glaring difference. When he had gotten rid of that itch, his primal desire to fight, all that was left was a glowing image.
He proved time and time again that he was superior to his opponent and the best among theirs. Perhaps, Blake thought, it was true. It was no longer something he exuded but had done.
He told her of his battle with visceral detail and upbeat energy partly due to her curiosity. He explained the gouge in his armor and the healing hole in his chest. And when he removed his helmet to eat, he showed the scab over his neck, a long line over his jugular.
Were the stories true? Blake begin to ponder the thought, the mere idea that their island was once home to gods. It seemed to be the only explanation to Y/N's size, strength, and unending will.
Then his story changed. His expression sharpened, even if a little. A bandit tribe infamous across Remnant had been brought to heel, and Y/N was their new leader.
Questions flicked across Blake's mind. The thought of anger was behind them, for now she wanted to know everything. Including why.
"You should've turned them in..." She said, breathless, then her brows furrowed into a glare. "Why didn't you??"
"My dream." He said. "Our dream."
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asking, recoiling.
"I made an oath to our people, Blake. I vowed I would retake our land, expand our borders. I'm going to do what should have been done a hundred years ago."
"What...?" Her first thought went to war, and subsequently fear. "You can't just—"
"I was told the same by Ozpin." He spat the name with indifference and sharpness. "But I'm willing to strike a deal. For our help, I'll be repaid in kind. Freedom, land, peace. That's all I ever wanted, Blake. You understand that the most out of everyone here."
"A deal?" Her ears twitched. He had forgotten about the secrecy behind his dealings.
"I hold leverage." He said cryptically. "They need my help, and I'll only give it for this one demand. No exceptions or alterations."
"If they need held you can't just—!" A glare formed on her face and anger rose in her throat. Before she spat venom, Y/N reached out, holding her shoulders. Then his confidence returned.
"I have a plan." He murmured. "Have you ever seen them go to waste?"
She wanted to say yes, and yet not one example came to mind. The only things to cross her were the many successes he held and how easy it was to grasp it.A few hours pass and things began to change. It was a subtle shift, a minor difference that slowly accumulated in intimidation and surreal views.
For once, and then on, Blake saw what Y/N was. He was like a superhero before, a fantasy she had pushed aside once she caught a sight of the real world. Now he was a part of that world, he was a hero, but also someone's enemy.
It was inevitable from that point on. Someone would appose his dream, someone would slink lower than ever before, or someone would simply depose him. She couldn't put a finger on which, but Y/N took them in a chokehold.
As the door to their dorm opened, she was greeted with an unfamiliar sight. A head of hair and face almost identical to her partner's.
Yang was quiet; her eyes puffy and voice weak. She had been crying, but it was a pain forgotten and soothed.
Y/N immediately drew his sword and set it over his shoulder, making his command wordless and with an uneasy calm.
"Blake." Yang chirped. Had it not been for her hoarse voice, it would've been more energetic than usual. "This is my mom, Raven."
Blake felt it in her gut; a need of pleasantries to take her hand and shake it. However, there was also an air to Raven, something different but in the end similar to Y/N. Her presence asked for respect while Y/N's demanded it.
"Blake." Raven repeated, her voice calm and her grip firm. "Yang's told me much about you."
Her hand was cold; physically so. Her guard was down and the cold air didn't bother her. Blake fully grasped what a Huntress was then. A force of nature unlike she had ever seen. She watched the match between her brother and Y/N and wondered how theirs had gone.
"Excuse me." She said and waited for her to step aside before cutting the air, using her semblance to open it. She wasted little time with their endeavors. Now Blake had little to read about when it came to her character, or her thoughts on the things Yang had shared.
They were a league far above their own. But at least then Blake felt relief; true calm after chasing and fighting a giant for so long.
"We'll be back soon." Y/N nodded. He reached out to Blake, taking her hand and letting their palms smooth over each other in reassurance.
With that they turned and left. Yang made an audible exhale at that, like she had been relieved of a mountain by a crushing fist.
"You think they're going to see mom?" Ruby asked after a long silence.
"Mom??" Yang turned back, frowning and gasping in surprise. "She's here?!"
"I-I thought she texted you, too!" Ruby exclaimed.
"Mom?" Blake looked to them then back at the fading portal. "Wasn't that your mom??"
