MAMA says, brushing the five year olds hair gently with a small smile. sayaka perked up at mamas question, a conflicted expression on her face as she thought about how to answer that

based of mamas body language, she was looking for a real answer.. but sayaka knew she couldn't just tell her about the letter tatiana gave her, she already slipped up telling ray

sayaka smiled brightly at mama, "i want to become smarter! tatiana told me, if i do well on the test, i'll get a adopted faster!" mama raised her brows in surprise at her words, slightly grimacing on the inside

"is that so?" mama said, taking a section of sayaka's hair and wrapping it into a small low bun. "you already do well on the tests, maybe you should spend more time with your siblings and play?" mama suggested

it was true, sayaka and her friends, norman and ray, had already gotten good scores on their tests (emma trailing closely). all being able to consistently reach the highest score, though sayaka knew she had to work to keep up

sayaka shook her head softly, "i will play more once i'm done reading this stack of book!" she said, holding up and revealing a book with her. receiving a light laugh from mama at her stubbornness and persistence

mama bought it, brushing the next section of her hair so she could make two low buns, "why do you want to get adopted so fast little one? don't you like it here at the house?"

sayaka thought about it, her brows furrowing slightly. she had always dreamed of the ideal family, she wanted to have a mom and dad. she was always envious of the other kids

tatiana had to wait twelve years before she was adopted.. and sayaka did not want to end up waiting so long like her big sister to find a loving family.

sure, her lie was she was studying for the tests to get adopted faster, but there was some truth to that statement. she did think if she was more skilled, families would look at her

she recalls the sobs of her siblings when it was announced that one of them was getting adopted. she felt sad sure, but there was always a pit of jealousy deep in her stomach

maybe she needed to try harder for a family. sayaka sighed softly and shook her head. she was grateful for her family she really was, but she always fantasized for a real family.

"sayaka?" mama questioned once more, noticing the awkward and tense atmosphere as she finished styling sayaka's hair. sayaka zoned back in, realizing she drifted to far from the topic

"sometimes i get jealous of my siblings when they get to go home to a family" sayaka mumbles, mamas smiled dimmed as she gazed at sayaka with a certain look in her eyes

sayaka looked closer at her expression, not one of sympathy.. but one of pity

why did mama look at her with pity?

SAYAKA put on her slippers, holding onto a lantern softly, the light bright against the dark hues of the night. she picked up another book from underneath her bed, walking towards the door of the room, ready to go to the library

suddenly, a soft groan from behind her froze her in her place, turning her head softly, she made eye contact with the bright green irises of a now awake emma, staring at her in curiosity

"sayaka? what are you doing up?" the orange haired girl exited her bed, walking towards her best friend who looked surprised. the lantern light must've woken her up

"i'm going to the library!" sayaka said in a hushed voice, emma staring at her with a deadpanned expression. sayaka sheepishly smiled at her friends expression

emma suddenly perked up, "why don't we all go? i'll wake up norman and ray so we can play together!" sayaka's eyes widened, before she could say anything in protest, emma ran out the room to wake up the two boys

sayaka took this an opportunity to put her book back underneath her bed, by the time they arrived there was no sight of the book. norman stood their looking groggy, ray glared at emma from behind her head

sayaka smiled as emma dragged the three of them two the library. although she was annoyed that her much needed reading session was interrupted, she was glad for the quality time together

norman and ray chatted with emma up ahead, ray scolding her harshly while norman was trying to calm down the tense situation, although sayaka could tell he was tired too

sayaka found herself smiling, maybe she didn't need a family if she had this one
