Lily and Connor were best friends. They both studied in one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the country. They had been best friends for about 4 years now. But Lily was madly in love with Connor. And he didn't know about it.

Lily was just lying down, reading a book in her dorm. When it was time for dinner, everyone was seated in the dining hall, and Connor sat down in front of her. Lily asked him "Connor, I have to ask you a very personal question, may I? It's a very personal question so I hope you don't get offended."

Connor smiled and said "Of course you can ask me anything, Lily. I promise I won't be offended." So Lily took a deep breath and asked "Do you... have someone who you wish was your girlfriend?" She felt her cheeks flush as soon as the words left her mouth.

Connor chuckled softly and said "No, I don't. Why do you ask?" He was looking at her intently, his eyes filled with curiosity.

Lily blushed even harder and stammered.  "I-I just wanted to know. You know, because I care about you and I want to make sure that... you know..." She trailed off, feeling even more embarrassed now.

Connor reached across the table and took her hand in his. "Lily," he said gently, "you don't need to worry about that. I care about you too, and I'm having the best time getting to know you." Lily felt a bit bold after his reply and asked "Do you have a crush on any girl?"

He smiled slightly and said, "Well, I never thought you'd ask this question." Lily was on the brink of tears and was feeling very emotional, and she was getting impatient. "Do you have a crush on any girl or not?" she asked again.

Connor looked at her for a moment, his eyes shining with something that Lily couldn't quite identify. Then he sighed and said, "Yes, I do have a crush on someone. She's the most beautiful girl in the universe." Lily was on the verge of tears. "W-wh-who is she?"

He smiled at her and said, "I'll tell you one day." She stared at him, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Lily broke down completely. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably. Connor reached across the table and put his hand on her shoulder, gently squeezing it. "Hey, hey, it's okay," he murmured. "It's just... you know, sometimes it's hard to say these things."

She looked up at him through her tears, her eyes red and puffy. "Why? Why did you have to say that?" she asked between sobs. "Why can't you just tell me who you have a crush on?"

Connor sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Because I'm not sure if it's the right time to tell you," he said honestly. "And I don't understand why it's affecting you? How does it make a difference whether I have a crush or not? You are my best friend and I expect you to support me either way. I'll tell you the name of my crush when I feel like it."

Lily looked at him, her face red and blotchy. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and took a deep breath. "Okay," she said quietly. "I guess I understand." She paused for a moment, then added, "But please don't keep anything from me. You know I can't handle secrets."

Connor smiled gently and reached across the table to take her hand. "I know, and I'm sorry. I promise I won't keep anything major from you. But this one... I just need some time." He squeezed her hand reassuringly.
Lily was adamant. "No. No, I want to know. Who is she? Who do you have a crush on?"

Connor sighed, his expression pained. "It's not anyone you know, Lily. I'm just... I'm infatuated with this idea of someone, someone who I've never met but who I think is perfect. It's stupid, and I know it, but I can't help it." He looked down at their intertwined hands, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's like a fantasy, I guess."

Lily stared at him, her eyes narrowed. "So, you're saying it's not real?" He shrugged. "I don't know... Maybe it's not real, in the traditional sense. But it feels real to me."
