As Jones savored the last bite of his chocolate bar, licking the rest of the residue from his fingers, he sighed with a hint of satisfaction, pondering on Felix's strange existence. His expression grew thoughtful as he delved back in time, to the days of exploring that library with his friend.
Some years ago, in the evening, Jones and his companion Jackson wandered a woodland area, the path seemed to stretch endlessly into the unknown, the comfortably eerie silence disrupted by the soft rustling of the trees and the gentle suspires of the wind, brushing across their face like a tender caress.
Jones glanced over to Jackson who seemed detached and displaced in reality, before speaking, his voice standing amidst the forest's symphonic backdrop. "Jackson, what did you want to say that was so important?"
With a sigh, Jackson downcasted his gaze, his shoulder slumping as his hopes of Jones not remembering were left in tatters. "Well," Jackson began, his voice carrying a heavy burden. "I was hoping you didn't ask that question... if I'm being honest."
Picking the tension, Jones furrowed his brows slightly, his eyes narrowing slightly. "What? What happened?" His tone was quiet yet concerned.
Jackson's tone filled the air with a sense of melancholy, a low murmur that echoed through the night. "I didn't know how to bring this up to you," Jackson glances at Jones with a hopeless, weary expression. "I don't want to hurt you, Jones."
Jones grabbed both of Jackson's shoulders with a reassuring touch, his expression softening in an effort to convey understanding. "Jackson, we've been side-to-side for years," Jones smiled gently. "practically bound by the hip... Think about all the time we've spent together."
Jackson's frown deepened. "I am..." He paused, letting an intense, suffocating silence draped around them before he murmured lowly again. "I am..."
Jones's smile faded away to something more hopeless as he murmured. "Jackson, if you don't tell me I'm just gonna go back to the hospital. I have to know if my family-"
Jackson's eyes flashed open with desperation. "No, don't!" He exclaimed, his chest heaving slightly. "Don't... don't..." his voice died back to a murmur as he searched Jones's face for a sign, maybe even a flicker of hesitation.
Another unsettling pause envelopes them, the distant sounds of crows cawing nearby. As the sounds of Jones and Jackson breathing echoed throughout the forest, adding a sense of dolor, Jones tightened his grip on Jackson's shoulder, determined to find an answer.
Jones furrowed his brows with frustration as turmoil, and emotion plaguing his mind as he shook Jackson. "What do you mean don't? Jackson." Jones's tone grew more impatient and serious as he involuntarily dug his nails into Jackson's clothing.
Jackson remained silent, his body going limp as he found himself cornered, torn between sparing Jones and wanting to preserve their bond, Jackson struggled to articulate a sentence.
Jones's expression hardened with anger, his throat tightened with emotion as tears started to well in his eyes. "Jackson," Jones spoke gruffly. "Speak to me. What happened to my family?" His voice wavering with restraint.
Jackson avoided Jones's pleading eyes, stammering. "They..."
Jones shook Jackson again, this time more forcefully. "They what, Jackson?" He demanded. "Tell me, Jackson."
Inhaling deeply, Jackson glanced back to Jones's furious gaze, steeling himself for Jones's reaction. "They... didn't make it from the car crash."
Jones processed Jackson's words before reality hit him like a supernova-infused thunderbolt, making Jones stumble back in shock, releasing his grip on Jackson as his world exploded in pain, eyes widening in disbelief.
