( for the love of pearl, PLEASE ignore the fact that auto caps isn't on- i forgot to turn it on before writing this so now i sound fucking stupid... anyway enjoy the chapter and try to ignore it.)

a dusky night casts over my sleeping body along with the mess of a bed i laid in, my eyes beginning to creep open. great. id slept into a night yet again, only because i stayed up until 10 am writing a report on a case id been assigned weeks ago. groaning, i turn my aching body to my other side, looking out the window with tired eyes. this stupid detective business was going to get me killed. not because of the multiple criminals id caught, but the exhaustion.

after contemplating how my life had went so south, i sit up while holding the side of my head, where my pounding headache relentlessly squeezed my brain. turning on my bedside lamp, i reach for the prescription pain medication and popped a few into my mouth before swallowing them dry. id been having migraines chronically since i was little, and my doctors finally took me seriously and stopped telling me to drink more water when i finally had a good income. seriously, how messed up is that?

my footsteps creek across the floorboards as i make my way to my fridge, which was decorated with magnets and pictures that should be framed. scanning its contents, i sighed at the lac of food. i always forgot to go grocery shopping, so i really only had condiments and hard liquors. other than takeout, my mother would occasionally drop some dinners she made off, as she was a culinary chef and used me as a taste tester. i'm not complaining, as a home cooked meal is so much better than having leftover pizza for a week straight. moral of the story, i needed to go shopping. bad.

after getting dressed in some clothes i was sure nobody would judge me for, i take a moment to look at my completion. this wasn't the best id looked, however it wasn't the worst. somehow, i made my lazy late night run outfit work. with that, i grabbed my keys and left.

the minute i stepped out of the apartment complex, something in the air was wrong. the entire street was lifeless, being able to hear a pin drop if one decided to fall from the sky. immediately, my mind went haywire. working in crime, i knew how abductions and murders started, so this wasn't a good sign. i proceeded with caution, looking for things around me to use as a weapon. strangely enough, a small pharmacy that i lived next to had its windows shattered, large shards of glass scattered across the concrete. i picked up a suitable piece, using the handkerchief i stored in my jacket pocket as a way to hold it without injuring myself.

as i walked towards the store with precaution, i slowly came to realize my sixth sense was correct... raccoon city had been demolished beyond hell, while its citizens swayed and groaned in some kind of trance. i quickly took out my phone, hiding out in a nearby alleyway try and find out what the hell happened. the moment i opened it, i read an alert message broadcasted to all devices. i could feel all the blood traveling out of my face as i read THE literal end of the world in a single sentence, the way it held an undertone of fear had my hands trembling. it stated all survivors needed to report to the police station for shelter, and luckily i lived relatively close to it.

panting as i ran past mindless hoards of turned civilians, i held the glass shard tightly, breaking the cloth and seeping into my palm and fingertips. the adrenaline pumping through my veins had caused it to go unnoticed, the thought of escaping being the only thing on my mind. guess it really did turn out useful to run in the track team during high school, because after no time, i outran the zombies and made it to the police station.

trying to catch my breath, i pounded at the front door desperately, noticing i caught the attention of a lingering mob. it groaned and slowly started limping towards me, which only elevated my state of panic.

"OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!! IS ANYONE EVEN IN THERE?!?" i shouted with all of the air in my lungs, occasionally turning back to glance at the soulless creature before me. i knew i had a weapon, but i wasn't trained in combat, and didn't know how close i could get to hurt it without getting bit in the face.

finally, after what seemed like a century, the door was finally opened, and i rushed inside without a second thought, slamming the door behind me. standing before me was a blonde police officer, all geared up and looking as if he were ready for battle. at least HE was dressed for the occasion...
