"jesus... take as much time as you need, not like my life is in danger or anything..." i sarcastically remark, earning a frown from the officer. guess he wasn't trained in dark humor, which was understandable. or maybe i just sounded too genuine...
"sorry, i wasn't in the main hall when you first started knocking. the name's Leon Kennedy, you?" he explains, causing me to nod. when he asked my name i nearly forgot it, the way he stared at me as he spoke allowed me to really take in his features. and man, did they fit right on his face.
"...oh- uh, im F/N L/N. do you have any idea what the hell happened to this city?" even though i knew the basics of it, i wanted to see if he had any more intel considering his authority.
he shakes his head, folding his arms over his chest. "unfortunately, not much more than you do. today was supposed to be my first day at this station." he spoke so gently, yet stern at the same time. i felt bad for him to have his first day dealing with this shitshow, knowing if it were me i would've just let the zombies take me. but there was something about him that was so motivating... not only did his presence scream "i'm in charge," but he seemed scared. his perseverance to still carry out his job in such a situation was admirable.
"ohhh... i was hearing some buzz around the station about some newbie coming this week. i work as a detective here, under the orders of lieutenant Marvin Branagh. speaking of, he was supposed to be on duty in the station tonight... you seen him around?" after asking, his slight frown returns for a encore. i could tell something was wrong, and quickly pieced together that it was about Marvin...
"i saw him... but he's not doing so great. he was bitten, and he's currently down because of his condition." he speaks with remorse for the fact that i had to find out this way, and my eyes widen in horror.
i couldn't lose him. he was the one who convinced me i was capable to accomplish the things i'd set my mind to, he was the one who believed in me when nobody else had my back.
as if on cue, a grunt followed by some shuffling cause both Leon and i to freeze. i rushed over to where the sound was created, only to find Marvin sitting up on a cot holding his bloodied side. i gasp, kneeling down and checking his wound, forcing his hand away from it. i looked up at him, distressed.
"lieutenant! how did this happen? are you alright? is there any medical supplies in store? i can see if i can try and hel-" i'm quickly cut off by his deep voice, his eyes meeting mine.
"y/n. i'm fine, don't waste your energy on me. i knew you would make it, and that's why i trust you'll move on and fight without me. don't be stupid, and protect yourself. your final order from me is to make it out of here alive, Leon beside you." he muttered weakly, yet i could feel the command ringing throughout my head. with a firm nod from me, i saw the life slowly drain from his eyes. it pained me to see someone i'd looked up to for years so weak, causing
tears to sting in my tear ducts .shortly after his breathing slowed to a stop, his eyes shot open. but this time it wasn't him... it was the virus that had taken over his conscious. as he lunged forward, i stumbled backwards, staring at what he'd become.
"stand down!" i hear Leon shout before a loud gunshot made me jump out of my skin, the bullet flying past me and into Marvin's cranium. two more shots were fired before he fell to the ground with a thud, my eyes wide with horror. i finally stand after staring at him in disbelief, wiping the secondhand blood from my cheek. there was no time to feel sorry, only time to carry out his last order.
Leon hesitates before speaking, placing a comforting hand upon my shoulder. i knew he had to shoot him, otherwise the both of us would get hurt. he was already dead before he got shot. "are... you alright..?" he asks, placing his gun back in his holster. he looked at me as if he was worried about my wellbeing, when id just met him five minutes ago.
"i'm fine. all i- all we can do now is just get out of this place, and avenge his death." i mumble, looking away and wiping the tears i didn't notice had fell.
"here, you should have this. i feel like it would have more meaning in your care." he reveals a combat knife from its pocket, and hands it to me with the safety lock on. id immediately recognize it, knowing it was Marvin's. even though i didn't know how he got it, i still took it with gratitude. i wasn't sure how to even use it, but i knew i would learn for his sake.
"thanks." i simply say before storing the knife in my pocket, not wearing any special gear like Leon was. i had a whole bunch of shit ahead of me, but not one idea how to execute it.
