"I Ocean take you Pete."
Jake froze starring at Ocean as the man finished his vows. Only when he heard the last of Ocean's promise to love him from then on forward did he dare speak.
"You know?" Jake whispered as tears began to cloud his eyes.
"It wasn't hard to figure out. I have known since the night I proposed after you slept I remembered the day we met and I checked the old file with your application you wrote the name Pete but them scribbled it out and wrote Jake in its place. I could still make out the letters spelling your real name. When Khun came it only confirmed it."
"I lied about my name and who I am and you still wanted to marry me?"
"I am still standing here and I always will be. I don't care if you are Jake or Pete or any other name you choose as long as whoever you want to be also wants to be with me."
"I am not sure who I want to be yet. I don't want to live in the past but I don't want to erase all of it either." As he spoke for the first time Pete realized he really didn't want to forget his past life because it was part of who he was, and he was the man Ocean loved unconditionally. He liked who he was.
"I love you just as you are and I'll still be here loving you tomorrow and every day after. I won't abandon you. I wont break my promises to you." Ocean leaned forward to kiss the pretty man whose hand he still held tightly only to be met with the interruption of the preacher placing a hand between the two men's faces.
"We are not finished yet gentlemen. The other groom's vows now. As before sir repeat after men. Is it Pete or Jake?" The preacher waited for an answer that soon came when the Jake whispered in the old man's ear.
"I Pete Jacob take you Ocean..." Pete cried as he took his vows accepting both the life he chose to leave behind and embracing the one he wanted to build with Ocean. He couldn't run from the pain and betrayal of is past but he could use it to make himself stronger, braver, and even better than he was before.
Pete kissed his new husband before both he and Ocean were pulled away from the alter to be rushed to the party that was awaiting them. The dimpled man laughed as his friends cheered for the two happy men. Pete was so distracted he hadn't even noticed that while they were being hurried to the beach to cut cake and celebrate with his friends that two men remained behind inside the old stone church.
"You did well. I really thought I would have to have Pol shoot you."
"I would never ruin this day. This is his day. I wouldn't have helped that Ocean guy just to ruin it."
"You do still love him so much?" Khun asked looking at the other man's vacant almost expressionless face save for the sorrow in the other's dark eyes.
"I will always love him. I will go to my grave loving him." These were the truest words Vegas had ever spoken. He had accepted the things he had done cost him the person he loved. He was ready to accept the consequences for a lifetime.
"Then why did you fuck it all up back then Vegas? I never understood why you of all people were the first to abandon him when he needed you the most."
"I am fool. I thought I could live one life of success in public and keep him with me in private, but that was a lie only fools believe. When he was slandered and abused I never tried to stop it or protect him because it suited my interests at the time and I thought he would never leave me. I was a bastard and a greedy coward. I didn't realize how much I loved him until he was gone from my life."
"Well you are right you are a cowardly bastard Vegas, but you do love him even if you realized how very much too late. You should stop coming to this island now. Let him live his life. Let him be happy with someone that deserves his love."
"I will never stop coming here. I will visit this place to watch over him every chance I get, but don't worry he wont see me I have been living in that house on the cliff for months and he has no clue about it."
" Vegas this will only end with you old and alone."
"Pete was the angel that protected me for so long. I will always be the demon that keeps him safe. You should go to the party enjoy the show cousin."
"What show? What did you do Vegas."
"Hurry now." Vegas placed a finger to his lips and shushed his elder cousin as he left to prepare one last task before he would return to his lonely house high above the village.
The party was happy and light. Everyone wished Ocean and Pete a long well lived life, though there was some explanations that had to be made about Jake having two names. It was easily explained away and the guests were too light hearted and filled with roast pork and coconut cake to inquire too much about it.
Khun was dancing with Pete when Ocean came to pull him away. " I am sorry love but we have to get to the dock if we want to be on mainland in time for our plane."
"He is right the sun is setting and you have two weeks in Paris to show each other all this love you have.
Pete nodded to Khun and let Ocean lead him away from the their guests towards the docks further down the beach. They had stepped only a few feet away when six masked men carrying gilded cages covered in golden blankets to the middle of the crowd. A seventh masked man followed and demanded the attention of everyone at the party stopping the newlyweds and drawing them back to the gathering.
"Khun what is this?" Pete asked his former boss only to see confusion in the older man's face.
The seventh masked man walked towards Pete carrying a velvet box presenting it to him without a word. Pete opened the box to find a silver chain necklace adorned with a sapphire and opal winged butterfly. Just as Pete touched the necklace the other six masked men removed the blankets and opened the golden cages freeing a wave of flitting blue butterflies. The filled the air and landed on the guests. Pete looked at the necklace and at the masked man who had given it to him while Khun No and Ocean watched the butterflies fly about the beach beautifully free.
"Thankyou Vegas. It is perfect." Pete said softly knowing exactly who stood in the silver and onyx mask before him.
The masked man bowed to Pete and motioned towards the boat by the docks reminding Pete that for now it was time to go. The masked man walked closer and wiped a tear from Pete's lovely face. Pete allowed the man's hand to linger on his cheek for a moment.
"Pete it really is time to go" Khun interrupted hoping not to save Pete this time but to save Vegas. Pete's heart was healed and full of new love while his old lover's heart was only beating in moments he could still see Pete.
"You are right it is time." Pete bowed to Khun No and then to Vegas who stood silently still wearing his ornate mask. Pete called for Ocean taking him by the hand as the came close enough to touch. Pete knew he would carry his old love with him even though it sometimes still hurt to remember how horribly it ended, but it was that ending that led him to becoming Jake. It led him to finding a new and happier life with his new partner. A life with Ocean was what he wanted. A new beginning a new adventure. Ocean wasn't a second chance love he was the love Pete had always been waiting for. The love he was meant to have all along. He didn't care if he lived as Pete or as Jake as long as he lived his life with Ocean he was happy.
