Chapter 3: The Elevator IncidentAfter buying everything I needed at the Mart, I headed home, my mind still preoccupied with the unsettling encounter with the crow. As I approached the elevator in our building, I absentmindedly scrolled through my Instagram, trying to distract myself from the lingering unease. The elevator arrived with a soft ding, and I stepped inside, my fingers hovering over the familiar buttons for the 2nd and 6th floors. But in my distracted state, I accidentally pressed the button for the 6th floor.Instantly, panic surged through me. In Japan, the number six (roku) is traditionally associated with bad luck and is avoided whenever possible. It is considered so unlucky that many buildings skip having a 6th floor altogether. Schools, universities, offices, and even hospitals treat the sixth day of each month as an unofficial holiday to avoid any unfortunate occurrences. My heart pounded in my chest as the elevator seemed to hesitate for a moment, the lights flickering ominously. Fear gripped me as I braced for something to happen, recalling the superstitions surrounding the number six. Then, just as suddenly as it had started, the flickering lights stabilized, and the elevator began to ascend. Each floor passing felt like an eternity, my nerves on edge. Finally, with a soft chime, the elevator stopped at the sixth floor, and the doors slid open. What I saw on the sixth floor shocked me to the core.
