"What?! It's been over a thousand years!" Oops. I didn't mean to say that.
"Since when?" the man who still held me questioned. I realized he was wearing armor, and had a sword by his side. (BTW, the guy in the picture up there ⇧ is the soldier who is holding him).
"Whoa! Is that a real sword? can I touch it? Oh, sorry for the topic change. I don't know when." I figured out a long while later that I am ADHD. Everyone looked at me like I grew another head. "What? why is everyone staring at me like that?"
"You do realize that you just asked a centurion to give his sword to you, right?" Emperor guy asks.
"Actually, I asked if I could touch it, not if I could hold it," I correct. When they just kept staring at me like I turned green, I asked, "Could you stop staring at me like that? Do I have food in my teeth? Wait, I haven't eaten in a year. Do you have any grapes or anything? I want to have maybe a chicken or something. It's been so long since I have had chicken. OH WAIT. DO YOU HAVE ANY SNAKE?! Actually, never mind. I haven't had a snake since I was like 60. I think I want to try something else. You know what? I- I should shut up, shouldn't I?"
"What is your name, young talkative assassin?" the leader asked, concern crossing his face when I blanched.
"I'm not an assassin, first of all. Second, I... I d-don't have a name," I say quietly. That's when everyone started at me again. It's really starting to get annoying. I shrug out the soldiers grasp. "why did you hold my arm so hard? honestly, I'm not going to run away."
"so, you don't have a name? And you just freed yourself from one of our strongest warriors like it was nothing? How do you feel about fighting in a war? As a general, of course. And we could call you 'the unknown' since no one, not even you, knows your name." The leader was starting to get excited now. "Then we could put you on the front lines and -wait, you know how to you a sword right? - and you could fit for us. I mean it's either that or being in jail for carrying a dagger in your sandal."
"You sound like me," I said, amused. "and yes I can use a sword, dagger, and a spear. Also, the dagger was in my boot, not a sandal. I don't own a pair of sandals. And not going to jail sounds amazing. And, also, 'the unknown' is kind of ominous, don't you think?"
That's when I look at my surroundings for the first time. There was a big desk in the middle of the room. Windows lined the walls, and at every window a guard stood, as if I would try to escape. On the desk, which was embedded with gold, had a bowl of fruit full of different fruits I had never seen before. I walk up and quickly take something that I think are grapes. I put it in my mouth and chew for a moment before swallowing.
"What is that?" I ask, putting another on in my mouth.
"That, young one, is a blueberry. And you are probably wondering who we are," the man at the desk said.
"No, not really, but now I'm curious," I say, popping the rest of the blueberries into my mouth. I chew, waiting for them to continue.
"This here, " the desk man said, gesturing to the guard behind me, "is Ponius. And I am Ceaser Augustus, the emperor of Rome. "
"cool." I look back and forth between Ponius, my guard, and the emperor. "wait am I supposed to know who you guys are?"
"You don't know who this is? The great emperor of Rome? You don't know who this is?!" Ponius freaked.
"Nope. Also, how far away is the town Nazareth from here?" I asked, unconcerned.
"What is Nazareth?" Ponius asked, still freaking out.
"I don't see it on my map... oh wait. Is this it?" Ceaser asked, pointing to a tiny word on the piece of paper in front of him.
"I- I can't read." I looked around uncertainly, suddenly feeling insecure and less confident. "Should I be able to? Read, I mean."
"Where were you born?" Ceaser asked.
"Egypt. Why?"
"I don't know but you were born in Egypt?!" Ceaser looked surprised. "you don't look like you were born there. But never mind that. Nazareth is about a month's walk from here... and if you go by sea... or by horse... around a week. But if you stop several times... maybe two months."
"What if I stopped at every city and town in between us for around a year each time?" I asked
"you look too young to be able to do that. but probably 50-ish years, I guess? I don't know." Ceaser seemed to be distressed a bit because I had never seen a leader fumbling over his decisions.
"Ok, um what were you saying about me fighting in a war?" I asked, changing the subject quickly.
"You would have to be trained under me if you even want to be a soldier." Ponius gave me a disgusted look.
"Well I am a very skilled hunter and I think that would be good yes?" I said.
"What do you know about hunting?" Ponius sneered, glaring at my skinny body.
"Oh, probably more than you, Ponius," I said as I walk around the room. the guards looked really uncomfortable letting me do that but they didn't stop me. I liked making people uncomfortable by doing nothing. "Like where to hide a knife," I take a knife out of my shirt pocket on the inside. I had designed them myself. "Or how to wield one." I toss the knife at Ponius, still walking around him. "And how to hide in shadows." walk over to a column in the office and disappear into the shadow of it, which I had been practicing for several years. "And I can sneak up on people very easily." Suddenly , I had my arms around Ponius' neck with a sharp pin against his neck. He yelped and jumped a bit, the needle leaving a thin trail of blood across his neck.
"Very nice. That would be useful. Wouldn't you say, Ponius?" Ceaser asked pointedly, glaring at Ponius who was freaking out. I let go of him and and stepped back, nodding my thanks at Ceaser.
"Are you ready?"
