With a soft click, the cuff around my ankle slips into the grass with a soft thud. Kai slowly rises to his feet in front of me, gently wrapping his arms around my waist and drawing me close.
"Kai..." I whispered.
"I couldn't stop myself, Paedyn," Kai breathed. "From the moment you crashed into me in that alley, every sensible thought flew out of my mind. The only one I could think of was you. When I closed my eyes, all I could see was your ocean blue eyes, silver hair, 28 freckles. And when I opened them, all I could see were visions of you."
Any sliver of a mask that he had on was shattered. Pain and regret painted his face, clear as day.
He takes a deep breath. "I- I love you, Paedyn. I love you with everything I have and I will continue to love you with everything I've got... which is why you have to run."
I stop. I've been trying to escape from the man standing before me for days. The man who's currently holding me in his strong arms, delicately running his fingers through my hair. The man who has stolen a piece of my heart. And now he wants me to run.
"What," I choke out. "Kai-"
"Paedyn, you have to listen to me," Kai drops to his knees before me, grabbing my hands and bringing them to his lips before placing a delicate kiss on each hand.
"Please, Pae. I beg of you. Just listen to me for once." He chokes out, eyes glassy. "You have to find a way to Izram-"
"Come with me," I breathe.
"What-" He starts.
"Kai," I whisper, my voice cracking. "You said it yourself. When you're out here, you're just Kai."
I stare into his sterling eyes. His face is unfamiliar. Instead of his flirty eyes, I'm staring into glassy ones, brimming with tears that threaten to fall with every passing second.
"You-" I take a deep breath. "You're my Kai."
I reach down and cup his face with my palms, his eyes fluttering close. I swipe away the tears that escaped his eyes with my thumbs. I lean down and connect my forehead with his.
Kai slowly opens his eyes. "They'll never stop looking for us," He softly says.
"Then we'll never stop running, so long as we're running together," I say, giving him a soft smile.
"Pae... I can't," Kai whispers softly, pain flooding his features. He slowly grabs my wrists, ready to pry them away from his face. "I- I swore my allegiance to-"
I cut him off with a soft kiss. His hold on my wrists loosen before his hands slowly find my waist. My knees find the soft grass, as Kai pulls me closer. My hand slips from his jaw and tangles itself in his hair. I whisper my pleas against his lips as poppies surround us like a safe haven, protecting us from our reality. Hiding us from our titles.
I slowly pull away, staring into the gray eyes that I have come to adore. Except instead of pain and regret, they now reflect defeat and relief.
I slowly smile in victory.
