I didn't mean to do it, I really didn't, it was like something had come over me, settling over my eyes like mist before the inevitable rain, my senses drowned out, but the lightning as painful as ever.
I zoned out in the gloomy ride of the police car, they said they'd take me somewhere I'd fit in, somewhere I'd learn to control myself, not that I hadn't tried already.
But of course, I had a punishment, they knew I didn't mean to do it, but could they really afford to show the community that what happened was tolerable? No, they couldn't.
We halted to a stop right in front of the Nevermore entrance, the gothic styled gate, the pristine yet haunted looking castle of a building, now that definitely caught my eye. Maybe this wasn't going to be as bad as I thought it would be. However, after I find my room and drop my stuff there, Sherrif Galpin will take me to my "community service job" which was really just working as a barista except I wasn't getting paid.
To make matters worse the Sherrif's son will be there, personally watching my every move. I decide to focus on the present, I climb out of the Sherrif's car, waiting for him to do the same, and as he does a woman approaches us, a woman in her late thirties to early forties, with the bleachiest bleach blonde hair you've ever seen.
"Ah Larissa," The Sherrif chimes
"Donovan, a pleasure as always."
I can immediately tell that these two people strongly despise each other, loathed even.
"Miss Scarlette, this is Principal Weems," Sherrif introduced
"Maia, it is such a pleasure to have you here, let me show you your dorm."
~ In the dorm
The room is colorful, with fairy lights strung from wall to wall, brightening the usually dark room and making it more "preppy" with hundreds of colorful plushies.
"Enid, dear, this is your new roommate, Maia Scarlette. And Maia, this is your new roommate-" The Principal was cut off by said roommate.
"Enid Sinclair! Howdy Roomie!" Enid squealed, she was definitely... a vibe. I don't know how I feel about it yet.
"Miss Sinclair will show you around after... well you know." Why didn't she tell Enid...? Enid's eye switched from Principal Weems to me back to Weems. She was definitely gonna ask about that later. I dropped my stuff on the empty bed, the uncomfortable looking mattress sinking under the weight of it.
"Well, we better get you back to Sherrif Galpin then Miss Scarlette. Come on let's go." Weems rushed, and Enid's ice blue eyes widened.
~ at the coffee shop
I had tried to put on my most "innocent" outfit hoping it would put the effect on them that I didn't really do what I did. A black turtleneck with a dark brown sweater vest, and a black blazer that hung slightly over my plaid skirt with tights underneath paired with Mary Jane heels, and for accessories I had silver hoop earrings with matching rings, my straightened waist length hair finished off with a brown headband. My lips glossy, lashes curled and black eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man and smudged just enough.
I climbed out of the cop car fidgeting with the hair tie around my wrist. I looked up at the building, "The Weathervane" guess that's where I'll be working for the next... I don't even know how long. As we opened the door to the coffee shop the tinkle of the bell echoed through the cafe, it was closed for the night, so I'll officially be starting tomorrow.
"Tyler!" Sherrif called out to, I'm assuming his son.
"Dad? What's u-" A tall boy with dirty blond hair and the most enchanting bluey green eyes I've ever seen, walked into the room. He looked different than I expected, I'm not sure exactly WHAT I was expecting, but it wasn't him. For one thing he didn't look much older than me maybe around nineteen? For another his smile traveled up to his warm eyes, that feature he DEFINITELY did not share with his father who had a constant hard glare on him.
"This is Miss Scarlette, the new volunteer."
"Dude, why'd you say it like that? 'This is Miss Scarlette, the new volunteer.' That's so boringly formal." I turned to Tyler. His eyes wide, a smile peaking behind. "Is he always like this?"
"Pretty much."
"Gee, you're like this with your own son? Tough." Tyler smiles at that, and I smile, knowing we just made some kind of alliance, maybe this won't be that bad. "I'm Maia by the way." I held out my hand and he shook it.
"I'm Tyler."
Sherrif looked between the two of us, sighed and rolled his eyes. "Tyler, show her the ropes, get it done by tomorrow, so that she can start working."
"Yes sir!" Tyler replies saluting at his dad.
"Alright see you at home."
"Night Dad." And with that Sherrif walked out, and we watched him until he was out of sight, I turn around to find Tyler zoned out looking at me.
"What?" I asked softly
"Nothing. absolutely nothing." He smiled still looking at me, mouth slightly open.
I decide to walk up closer to him, I look him in the eyes, tilt his head up so his mouth is closed and whisper, "You're drooling." I wink, and walk away leaving him looking at me, and I wonder what the hell I just did. Out the corner of my eye I see him scrambling to wipe the non-existent drool from his face, and I smirk. This is gonna be fun.
