I stared at the nine, seemingly innocent numbers, wondering if what I was about to do was the right move. My mind told me that Soobin, Taehyun, Beomgyu and Kai had a mystery that I might not like solving, but at the same time a small voice inside kept telling me that I had too little attractions in my life and they could change that.
I had no problem meeting new people. I was an extrovert in every sense of the word, but often others thought that because I was an omega, I started a conversation just to get a dick in the ass. I couldn't count how many times Hongjoon had to defend me from pushy alphas who I looked at for a second too long and they took it as interest on my part.
"What are you thinking about?" I jumped, almost dropping the phone from my hand. I quickly locked the screen and placed my hand over my heart, taking a deep breath.
"If I kill you, will they think that I have done a favor for society and let me go free, or will they put me on probation to at least give the impression that I have done something wrong?" I said it right away without hesitation, which earned me a slap on the back of the head from Wooyoung.
"You would get the death penalty immediately. Everyone would miss such a beautiful face. Not to mention that male omegas are very rare."
"And that's why they wouldn't kill me, stupid." I stuck out my tongue and Woo laughed.
"Seriously, what's going on? It's rare to see you this serious."
"I just have something on my mind that's bothering me, but don't worry, it's nothing too bad. If I can't make a decision by the weekend, I'll talk to you about it, okay?" Woo frowned, looking at me closely. For a moment I had the impression that he would continue to press the topic, but fortunately he smiled and nodded.
"Okay, but remember that I'm here for you. I'll help you bury even the bodies, just let me know where, when and if you have shovels or should I take mine."
"I hope it will never be necessary, but I will certainly remember it." I patted him on the shoulder, tied my apron tighter, and walked over to the first customers of the day. I loved having changes in the morning. Not only were there fewer people due to the early hour, but Wooyoung, Felix and Han always accompanied me.
Fortunately, I didn't have to talk to Hongjoon about the fact that I didn't want to do the evening shifts anymore, because the man himself had come to the conclusion that it was a bad idea to have omegas on them. From 6 p.m., alphas, tired after work, came out into the streets, looking for easy victims. Joon recently witnessed Felix being groped by one of the men, so from this week onwards, Jongho, Chan and Mingi would always be on shift in the evenings.
If there was a need for a change, one of them was always supposed to be close to me, Wooyoung, Felix or Han and they were to escort us to the door of our apartments. Usually I was angry at Hongjoon's over-sensitivity, but now I was truly grateful for his decisions. Many times I managed to avoid the worst, but I felt in my bones that I would not always be this happy. It had been really close lately, and if it weren't for Taehyun, Beomgyu, and Kai, I would definitely have ended up, if alive, behind a dumpster, exploited and humiliated.
Truly, the worst thing I could think of was someone taking away what I had so carefully kept for my future alpha. For someone I would trust implicitly and someone who would mark me as his forever. Unfortunately, I haven't met anyone like that yet, but I've been patient. My mom met my dad when she was almost thirty. I was only twenty-two that year, so I was still terribly young.
"Hi." I jumped up, not expecting someone to come up behind me just as I was taking down an order from a nice, older woman.
"Will that be all?" I asked, and when she nodded, I turned to Kai, who was smiling widely. "Oh, hey." I returned his gesture and, nodding for him to follow me, went behind the counter to start preparing the older women order.
"I came to pick up my order, I placed it about half an hour ago and I received a text message that it was ready to be picked up."
"Could I see him?"
"Of course." Kai handed me his phone, and after making sure he was telling the truth, I pulled out the bag with the appropriate number from under the counter.
"Please make sure you have everything you ordered." Kai looked down into the bag, seemed to be counting something, and finally looked up, nodding.
"I have everything. Except four coffees."
"That's right, we always make them only after the person ordering arrives, so that it's fresh. Give me a moment, I'll take care of it." Of course I could have given the job to someone else, but something inside me told me not to. So I quickly handed out cakes and other drinks to people who had placed their assumptions with me, and then returned to Kai. "Two black, one latte macchiato and one caramel, right?"
"Exactly." The brunette confirmed and I smiled. "Why haven't you texted Soobin yet?"
"I'm sorry?" My eyes widened, not expecting such a direct question.
"I'm sorry if that sounded bad. It's just been three days and we still haven't heard from you. I was wondering why since you showed interest in being friends with us." Kai scratched the back of his neck, looking really embarrassed. And although I was still surprised, I felt the sudden tension leave my body.
"I want to be friends with you, I just didn't know what to write." I shrugged, not really telling the truth. But what else was I supposed to say? That I wasn't sure if they were good people? That something was telling me that they would get me into trouble more often than I would like, but at the same time something was drawing me to them, haunting me even when I went to sleep?
"Try it from the very beginning, it will go smoothly after that." Kai ordered, looking at me closely. "Soobin will be happy even if you would just send a dot."
"Huh? Why?" I looked at the man curiously, but he looked like he had said too much, so I didn't press when he didn't answer. I quickly finished making the coffees, put them in a paper box and served them to Kai.
"We're organizing a small party at Soobin's this weekend. It'd be nice if you could come over with your friends, even for an hour."
"A little party, huh?" I asked worried, but Kai's smile quickly reassured me. I don't know what it was about him, but he had a really easy way of making someone trust him and feel comfortable around him.
"Just me, Beomgyu, Taehyun, Soobin and three of our friends. They're really cool people, you'll like them." The man assured, but I wasn't so sure.
"I'll see what I can do. Can I have your number? I'd like to have a way to contact you if I need anything, ask for details and so on."
"Write to Soobin, he knows all the information. Now I really have to go because my break is ending. Until later Yeonjun, it was nice to see you again!"
"You too!" I responded with less enthusiasm, waving until he disappeared out the door. I took a deep breath, looking around, but somehow Wooyoung wasn't around, so he couldn't see me with Kai. Luckily, because even if I wanted to meet the strange four, he wouldn't let me. Just... Could I go to them alone? What if those three are all alphas and have the advantage? What if they were working together to kidnap dumbass like me?
"Get to work, don't be lazy! Break is only in an hour!" Han snapped, slapping me hard on the back. I groaned in pain, squinting my eyes.
"Do you want to lose your life?"
"Mom, Yeonjun is threatening me again!" Han shouted, not caring that several people started looking at us.
"I'm telling you again, I'm not your damn mom!" Wooyoung shouted back from somewhere in the back and I laughed out loud. All the accumulated tension flew out of me and I was grateful to my friends for that. They always knew how to make me feel better with their stupidity.
