Chapter 10: Unexpected Reunion

Weeks had passed since Lucy's birth, and Jameson had been so consumed with adapting to fatherhood that he'd unintentionally isolated himself from the outside world. His phone lay forgotten, messages and missed calls piling up unnoticed.

It was a quiet Thursday afternoon when the pounding on his apartment door startled both Jameson and Lucy. The baby, who had been peacefully feeding, began to cry.

"Jameson! I know you're in there!" Benn's voice, tinged with worry and frustration, carried through the door.

Jameson's heart raced. He hadn't spoken to Benn since that awkward coffee shop meeting months ago. Balancing Lucy in one arm, he hesitantly opened the door.

Benn's expression shifted from anger to shock as he took in the sight before him. His eyes darted from Jameson's disheveled appearance to the crying infant in his arms, then to the apartment beyond, cluttered with baby paraphernalia.

"What... what's going on?" Benn stammered, stepping inside.

Jameson sighed, gently bouncing Lucy to calm her. "It's a long story, Benn. Come in, please."

As Benn entered, his eyes wide with disbelief, Jameson continued to soothe Lucy. "This is Lucy," he said softly. "My daughter."

Benn sank onto the couch, his mouth agape. "Your... daughter? But how? When?"

Jameson sat beside him, adjusting Lucy so she could continue feeding. "Remember Veronica? Well, it turns out she was pregnant when we broke up. She... she decided she wasn't ready to be a mother, so here we are."

For a moment, the only sound in the apartment was Lucy's soft suckling. Benn's eyes were fixed on the baby, a mix of emotions playing across his face.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Jameson felt a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry, Benn. I should have. Everything happened so fast, and I was overwhelmed. I didn't know how to reach out, especially after... well, after our last conversation."

Benn nodded slowly, processing the information. "Can I... can I hold her?"

Surprised but touched, Jameson carefully transferred Lucy into Benn's arms. The tenderness with which Benn cradled the baby made Jameson's heart ache.

As Lucy drifted off to sleep in Benn's arms, the two men began to talk. Jameson explained everything - the pregnancy, quitting his job, getting it back, the birth, and the whirlwind of the past few weeks.

Benn listened intently, his eyes never leaving Lucy's peaceful face. When Jameson finished, Benn looked up at him, his expression soft.

"I wish you had told me sooner," he said. "I would have been here for you. For both of you."

Jameson felt tears prick at his eyes. "I know. I'm sorry. I thought... I thought maybe I'd lost my chance with you."

Benn was quiet for a moment, then he reached out and took Jameson's hand. "Life's complicated, Jameson. But some things... some people... are worth figuring it out for."

As they sat there, Lucy sleeping peacefully between them, Jameson felt a glimmer of hope. The road ahead was still uncertain, but having Benn here, understanding and supportive, made it seem less daunting.

"So," Benn said with a small smile, "tell me everything about little Lucy here. I've got a lot of uncle duties to catch up on."

Jameson laughed softly, squeezing Benn's hand. As he launched into stories about Lucy's first weeks, he realized that sometimes, life's biggest challenges could lead to its greatest joys. And perhaps, just perhaps, this unexpected turn of events would lead to the relationship he and Benn had both been hoping for all along.
