Yesterday's events resonated in ways Mei'lani never thought of. She was learning that people can surprise you in ways you could never expect. Khaleesi was outspoken, at least depending on who's around. "My parents are losing their shit, but they're going to have to get over it," a message sent about ten minutes ago with Mei'lani replying not too long after "praying for you."
Sitting beside her bed, Mei'lani's fingers reunited with her crochet hook. The thick material grew steadily in soft earthy tones of sage green; each yarn slip aligned seamlessly over the other, creating a small headband with a pattern running down the middle.
A lack of resources wasn't enough to keep Mei'lani from tying together a small project; still, the idea of restricted access to such a vast array of pigments was miserable. Even more so when grandma started to come down with a sudden fever, leaving Mei'lani stuck in the confines of her room.
"Here, go to the store and bring back some medicine," her mother orders, handing over a card before closing the door behind her as the bang of an abrupt thunderstorm ensues. Usually the pitter-patter of nature's lullaby could soothe Mei'lani's uneasiness, even capable of cradling her to sleep, but it had appeared that once she got dressed, the rain transformed into a roaring beast.
Mei'lani marches down the stairs, doubtless in her movement, until a wave of panic tips off her balance. The air thickens, and her lungs tense. She catches herself; one wrong step could lead to cracking her skull open on the remaining steps. Placing her hand on the door knob, Mei'lani looks to her father resting on the couch, staring at the black screen reflecting his heavy frown.
"Dad, could you come with me?" Weirdly, despite being only a few feet away, her father remained unperturbed. Mei'lani treads forward, reaching out for her father, "Dad—"
Shut up!" he shouts, yanking her by the arm. It wasn't like him to be so rough.Nearly mistaking him for stranger from his ghastly look. Sunken eyes and slumped posture. This wasn't her father it couldn't be. In a last second of judgment she heads upstairs bursting into Damon's room. "Get your jacket we're leaving" she whispers avoiding any chance that her parents might be listening.
"What's going on?" he says reluctantly.
"Just for once, do what I say." Suddenly, the sound of a loud crash echoes throughout the house. "Hide," Mei'lani begs her brother. And probably for the first time, he does so without any questions.Mei'lani steadys her breath, reaching for her phone. "Someone broke into our grandma's house," she says as the woman on the phone urges her to stay still and wait for the police to arrive. But the screech of Mei'lani's mother has her charge from her brother's room to find her father's hands around Asiyah's neck.
"Dad stop" she pleads with tears in eyes as her father finally releases his grip seemingly realizing what he done watching the terror in both his daughters and wife's eyes as Asiyah clings for air. "I'm sorry" he cries falling to his knees. Out of the darkness Mei'lani's grandma emerges her eyes a vivid yellow as she grins menacingly her teeth now jagged edges along her mouth.
She uplifts her heavy claws at the disfigured corpse of Mei'lani's grandma comparable to that of mangled pieces of flesh. The pungent odor engulfs into Mei'lani's senses causing her eyes to water and gag. "Ma," Asiyah says, horrified.
Slowly, the entity moves forward. "Ah," Mei'lani's father screams, charging forward, halted by an invisible force that carnes him aloft, contorting his body in obscene agony with every sharp twist, achieving unimaginable suffering.
"Malik" Asiyah mother bellows watching his body fall to the ground. The demonic like creature switches it glance to Mei'lani as a loud thud from upstairs catches its attention."Damon" she thinks to herself.
Petrified in fear with morbid visions. She was unable to save herself or her parents. Damon rushes out of his window, only making a foot out before his leg is impaled by the creature's talons. "Help," he cries out as a small pool of blood settles in the carpet fabric. In a matter of seconds, Mei'lani emerged, tightly wrapping pieces of yarn around its neck as the demon cackled sinisterly.
Using all her strength, she drags the beast to the floor and firmly jerks her shoulders back. Finally, once the laughter comes to an end, she looks up at her baby brother. "Damon!" she shouts, holding her brother in her arms. Red and blue lights flash outside as they walk out, clinging to one another until a paramedic attends to Damon's wounds.
"Your father will be fine, but whatever attacked you guys must have gotten away," the officer says as Mei'lani looks to one of the windows, nodding her head as they head to the hospital.
